Blowfish on Bay | Johnson Chou
Toronto / Canada / 2011
Located behind the historic façade at the foot of the Bay/ Adelaide centre the new space was conceived as an evolution from the ideas of the first, a space intended to allude to it’s asian-fusion cuisine, re-interpreted architecturally in it’s forms and details as a collage of western and asian references.
The new Blowfish takes these ideas, manifested for example, in the chandelier and screen elements, and develops the metaphor and conceptual point of departure further. The design is akin to a “stream of conscious”, mélange of forms, details, textures and surfaces evocative of objects related to, or found under water.
To create forms and details evocative of, or associated with water. These include vessel-like forms, rib-like screen elements, the use of reflective or mirror-like materials that convey a “wet” appearance. Interior elements appear to float, from the black granite hostess desk to a wood screen that divides the bar and dining areas. A custom chandelier comprised of pyrex tubes filled with crystals are composed to suggest movement of water or schools of fish. A semi-private seating area is shaped like a vessel to contain water.
Heightened sense of movement and view. The designers applied great effort to “script” one’s movement through the space with an emphasis on long, terminating views; from the entrance and hostess desk to a gentle ramp leading to the lounge and bar areas. The movement through the space revolves around the wood dividing screen, punctuated with interior elements such as the vessel seating area, fireplace and sushi bar.
