For a characteristic 1930s house in Nijmegen we made the design for a modern extension and a new layout of the ground floor. We also made the design for the layout of the living kitchen.
The main wish of our clients was to give more openness to the previously ground-breaking ground floor. By involving the kitchen in the other living areas and the garden much more light has been created, resulting in a pleasant living climate. In our design we respectfully dealt with the original details, but were not afraid to add a contemporary element here and there. We placed a large steel frame, which, thanks to its timeless appearance, fits nicely with the 1930s atmosphere. The frame also provides extra light on the entire ground floor. It also ensures that the spacious city garden is nicely taken up by the house. In our design we looked closely at the existing construction so that the number of interventions that were necessary could be limited to a minimum. This allowed us to keep an existing column and incorporated it into the kitchen in a charming way. By lowering the ceiling from this spot, a nice transition was created between the old dining room and the new part. Together with the clients, we selected various materials, such as a new wooden herringbone floor that has been extended from the back to the front. Furthermore, you do not see any radiators in the extension because we have incorporated the heating in the wall.
