Eastwind Hotel & Bar, a 1920s bunk house turned boutique hotel, will open in
Windham, New York in the Catskill Mountains on June 1, 2018. Originally known as a retreat
for hunters, fly fishermen and other outdoor enthusiasts, Eastwind will welcome a new
generation of guests year-round, while retaining the earthy charms of its original iteration. In
conceptualizing the hotel, founders and first-time hoteliers Bjorn Boyer, Julija Stoliarova, Daniel
Cipriani and John Burnett were inspired by the property’s past, innovative hotels, and their
own travel experiences.
“We are excited to announce the opening of Eastwind and look forward to welcoming guests
to our mountain hideaway,” said Bjorn Boyer, owner of Eastwind. “We know spending time in
nature is a humbling experience, so we wanted to create an upscale yet accessible way for
today’s travelers to unplug, unwind and connect with friends and family.”
Unfolding across a hillside with sweeping views of Windham Mountain, Eastwind blends natural
beauty with communal-minded gathering spaces. Guests can relax in the sauna, enjoy a night
cap at the Salon’s cocktail bar, or cozy up by the fire pit while admiring the scenery.
There are 19 accommodations with four room types for guests to find their ideal travel
experience and feel at home. Eastwind’s Creative Director, Julija Stoliarova, designed the
interiors of the Bunk House, Hill House, and Lushna Cabins. The guestrooms boast a Mid-
Century electric look with a hint of clean urban design energized by the hotel’s backcountry,
while Lushna Cabins embody a Scandinavian notion of camping without sacrificing comforts.
The decor consists of thoughtfully sourced furniture, encapsulating the sentiment of lagom -
the Swedish word meaning “just the right amount.”
The Bunk House & Hill House: The heart of Eastwind, the Bunk House is home to the main
lobby check-in area; 11 guest rooms including two “writer’s studio" suites; the Salon, a
gathering space to grab a perfectly made espresso or wind down with a crafted signature
cocktail; and an outdoor deck, complete with a fire pit on the lawn. The Bunk House floors are planked with reclaimed wood from the original structure dating back nearly a century, while the
walls are adorned with black and white photography. Other design elements in the Bunk
House’s public areas include a mix of modern chairs, faded Turkish rugs, communal tables, and
a Malm fireplace. Thrifted photos of families camping, “how-to” guides on foraging, and a
library of curated books will lend a convivial vibe.
The Hill House building consists of five ground-level guest rooms. Here, guests can choose
from either double queen beds or King beds with sofas, along with a birds-eye views of the
surroundings.
Awash in a muted color palette with pops of navy, black and white, the Bunk House and Hill
House guest rooms feature custom bed frames with Frette linens, lounge chairs and ottomans
by Masaya & Co., and Otis and Eleanor speakers. Textured comforts include hand-woven
Turkish rugs, Alexis Sassard custom wall-hangings and seasonal Faribault Mill wool throws.
Behind black barn doors, the ensuite bathrooms boast walk-in showers with rainheads offset by
farmhouse basin sinks, all in champagne brass finish, replete with full-size Zenology amenities.
Schoolhouse style ceiling lamps and bedside lamps in black and brass spotlight varied
discoveries in the room, including framed mushroom illustrations, closets wallpapered by
House of Hackney with scenes of partying animals, and bespoke apothecary kits.
Lushna Cabins: Further up the hill, guests who favor almost-camping will wander upon the
solitary Lushna Cabins, wooden A-frame huts for a more reclusive “glamping” experience. The
minimalist structures measure 14 by 14 feet and feature a window spanning one entire wall
with fantastic views over Windham Mountain. While simple in aesthetic, each Lushna Cabin is
insulated to weather the seasons and offer a comfortable stay with queen beds in white Frette
linens, wood chests for storage, and wildlife journals. Lushna Cabin guests have access to their
own private bathroom called the Rain Room and a camping kit with grilling equipment to enjoy
solo fire pits.
A reflection of the region’s ever-changing natural beauty, programming at Eastwind will evolve
with the seasons. Woodland movie screenings in the summer, game nights in the winter, and
intimate concerts and art classes indoors and out will offer a respite from the digital world.
Locavores attracted to the Catskills’ emerging dining scene can peruse on-site farmer’s markets
or partake in excursions guided by visiting chefs. Intuitive outdoor necessities are also
complimentary for guests to borrow, ranging from rain boots for fall foraging, snowshoes for
winter expeditions, and backpacks for summer hikes.
Eastwind is located in Windham, a two-hour drive from New York City. Dubbed the “Land in
the Sky,” Windham is a laid-back mountain town overlooked by Windham Mountain. The
village’s Main Street is dotted with restaurants, breweries, art galleries, boutiques, and a local
theatre. Guests can take a quick drive or borrow one of the property’s bikes to venture into
town. The mountain and its surrounding forest offer world class skiing and year-round activities
that run the gamut from horseback riding, fly fishing, hiking and biking, to water tubing, swimming holes or golf trips, and even day trips to Kaatterskill Falls, Giant Ledge and
Windham Path.
