Cities are changing and changing frequently throughout their history, and the need to have simple solutions to increasingly complicated problems is key to delivering faster, more accurate results. In this way, the creation of standards to solve various situations in a complex urban space opens a field of possibilities to solve these problems. This is due to the fact that the standards do not present a specific final product but because they are part of a design process, and thus, they are able to solve numerous scenarios because they are concise, multifaceted, interconnected and replicable in several places.
To explore this concept of Urban Pattern, a differentiated teaching methodology was developed by the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Porto (FEUP / FAUP). Being this methodology applied in the scope of the discipline of Urban Design Studio, in the Master course in Planning and Urban Project.
The classes had a student-centered approach, in which the focus of instruction is changed, passing from the teacher to the student, and aims at adopting a creative and relational posture in the learning process. This approach was based on the book "The Pattern Book European Masters in Urbanism" TUDelft 2013. And from a change of focus between teacher and student, and through the adoption of a new methodology, the role of the teacher was transformed. be intended for practical guidance in the work developed by students.
Based on this structure, the class was divided groups for the development of the work. In this way, each group was responsible for presenting three problems verified in the city of Porto and, later, different standards were presented, to solve such problems. In addition, conceptual and abstact models have been elaborated to depict the standard approach.

Work developed Filipe de Souza, Isabela Fiuza, Lorraine Moraes.
