Multi-level gut interior renovation of a single-family residence, including mudroom, kitchen, bath, and laundry area. East Grand Rapids / United States / 2016
The San Lu Rae House represents the thoughtful internal transformation of a true mid-century modern home for a young family who had purchased the home from the original owner.
"MMA's creativity allowed us to complete a renovation of our mid-century modern house without losing the architectural features that drew us to this style," the homeowner shared.
In the highly-used family entrance to the house, the existing spaces were fractured and small, with adjacent spaces equally small and at a different level as the main house. The renovation project included only about 1,000 SF, but the removal of select internal walls created an expanded kitchen with views to an adjacent park that had been previously out of sight.
A new bathroom is conveniently located for direct access to the pool area, and a new mud room has plenty of storage for an active family. The expanded kitchen has a broad view of the adjacent dining room, where the ceilings have been opened up to create new interior volume to add to the spaciousness of the interior. Then new kitchen and renovated areas are modern and bright, while the home’s exterior retains all of the details and character of the original house.
