The project involves an apartment located in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. Mongolian maybe a lesser-known word to the world, and can only be associated with Genghis Khan and his grand empire in the past. Mongolian nation become a group of mysterious as time goes by, because the populations is so rare. Nowadays, half people live in Mongolia(we call it Outer Mongolia) and the other half live in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, due to Yalta Agreement of World War II. For China part, Mongolian culture has been mixed well with main cultures(as you understand as Chinese cultures), but the people still maintain a package of traditional lifestyle especially unique aesthetics.

The two Mongolian artists, who are the owners of this apartment, have warm and deep enthusiasm for this rare culture. Their requests for this design project include as follows. Firstly, the building structure should not be changed massively. Secondly, the essence of Mongolian culture should be embodied in the design. Based on this brief, therefore, NA-DECO studio decided to make a chic space which could satisfy the couple’s usual urban needs without losing a deep aesthetic touch.

The design inspiration comes from the sculpture master Richard Serra's work. The placement of three groups of golden curving walls covered by metallic tiles in the core position of the living room not only provides suggestion of the space division, but also adds romantic atmosphere like  wandering in a small art gallery. What’s more, soft green, dark blue and vintage floor tiles with exquisite pattern compose the main backdrop of the apartment, making the golden walls look powerful and chic.

Some collections of the owners’ are also included here: self-made sculptures, a-hundred-years-old wine pot in the kitchen, brass old stirrup and a small porcelain antique in the living room, and other objects, which are the salute to the ancient civilization. Furniture and art works are selected carefully according to their “old and new” principle. Every object in this space plays off each other and contributes to the whole orchestra.
