Southend Pier Cultural Centre by White arkitekter and Sprunt is sited at the head of Southend Pier, the world’s longest pleasure pier. The sweeping geometric form and harmonising palette of materials of the building celebrates the topography of the windswept site integrating it into the scenic landscape. The dynamic roof shape, which measures up to 9 metres from floor level, houses a large multi-purpose events space with floor to ceiling glazed elevations. Orientated South facing, the entrance facade is set back beneath the roof forming a sheltered entrance and café terrace from which to enjoy views out onto the water. The centre has sloping walls and a twisting hyperbolic paraboloid roof form designed in partnership with structural engineers Price & Myers. Due to the challenging conditions of the site, contractors Kier fabricated the building off site at Tilbury Docks and craned it into place in one piece. Durable materials have been specified throughout to help achieve a long lifespan. During the day the cultural centre's GRP cladding has a translucent quality that changes tone, appearing white in bright sunlight and greenish grey when the sky is overcast. At night luminaires delineate the building’s sculptural profile. Southend Pier is a landmark structure closely associated with the town and particularly to the typology of Southend’s shoreline. The Cultural Centre brings new life to the promenade and reclaims the pier as the town’s main attraction for both the town’s residents and tourists. Southend Pier Cultural Centre has won a regional award in the Royal Institute of British Architects annual awards 2013, the most rigorously judged awards for architectural excellence in the UK. [IT] Il molo è collocato sulla foce del Tamigi nella località di Southend-on-Sea e, con i suoi 2,158 metri di lunghezza rappresenta la banchina turistica più lunga del mondo, nonché una delle mete di viaggio più note del Regno Unito, destinazione vacanziera di molti londinesi a partire dal primo Ottocento. La proposta di White Arkitekter trasforma la bachina in un’“estensione” pedonale e ciclabile della vicina High Street. La passeggiata sul molo viene scandita da una serie di nuove funzioni ed attrazioni, collocate a distanza di 500 metri l’una dall’altra. La testa del molo è immaginata come una moderna agorà - in parte teatro, in parte spazio dedicato all’arte - che funge da vivace luogo d’incontro sia per la gente del posto che per i visitatori. Il teatro all'aperto, ricavato da una piattaforma a terrazza con 500 posti a sedere ha come quinta naturale la costa e lo specchio d’acqua. Completano il progetto due nuovi edifici destinati ad ospitare rispettivamente un centro culturale e un ristorante. I nuovi volumi saranno energeticamente autosufficienti, fruendo di turbine eoliche per la produzione di energia elettrica, soluzioni per la ventilazione naturale degli interni e pompe di calore ad acqua di mare. La proposta prevede l’uso di materiali a bassa manutenzione, di lunga durata e non rifiniti come legno, acciaio corten e vetro. “Siamo estremamente orgogliosi di essere stati selezionati per lavorare con questo tesoro iconico”, ha dichiarato Anders Svensson, fondatore di White Arkitekter.
