THIS IS A RESTORATION AND EXTENSION PROJECT TO A SINGLE STOREY 1930'S INTERWAR PERIOD HOUSE IN MELBOURNE AUSTRALIA

The client’s brief to our studio was to restore and add a new extension to an existing single storey 1930’s Interwar Period freestanding house in one of the first Melbourne suburbs to be developed according to the pattern of post-war suburbia.

Our design approach to the new extension was to be sympathetic to the existing archetype of the 1930’s Interwar period architecture rather than creating something that was totally foreign.  The colonial bars on the existing windows on the original 1930’s part of the house that had already been continued to the 1980’s extension were rephrased on the new extension.

We created separation between the front and the rear part of the house by introducing a full height glass door at the end of the hallway. This zoned these two areas to minimise the running cost of the heating and cooling system during summer and winter.

All of the new exterior and the new and existing interior light fittings use LED lights.

The new bi-fold doors to the Western and Northern terraces provide a simple solution to the clients and also give them the flexibility to manipulate the air circulation to the open plan kitchen and living areas.
