HOUSE 1|6 Gangwha

It’s a home to 4 people of family, 50 years old married couple, 11 years old son, and 6 years old daughter. As a place where the kid’s grandparents lived and the kid’s mother was born was a place of peace in Ganghwa-do. The mother who often leaves home for care of her maternal mother, father who goes to work to maintain the family’s life, and children who stay at home whole day. The house structure was worried because the structure wasn’t safe, full of moisture, and heat insulation wasn’t working properly.

First of all, we built a home with a goal to return to a healthy house and make room for children. We set a goal by making the heat insulation work properly so in winter, it’s not cold, and in summer, making draught and ventilation work properly to be able to make the house cool, and making a various space to experience for the kids who don’t have friends nearby.

Sitting the House by pleasantness of a View
There is a low mountain in north and huge plain in south, so we set a goal to sit the house on natural topography and start designing. We planned to adapt to natural topography and by scenic arrangement and height. Also, we plan to save topography as usual and make a difference between the level. Just as it says, “building as the land looks.” We didn’t select a flat land for a reason because highland can give a special space and lowland for a normal space. We chose to make low roof on south and high slope roof on north side. A house adapted to geographical features were cited in the landscape of traditional architecture.

Neutral Space
We introduce a space that isn't inside or outside positively. By applying a neutral space when constructing a house, the space becomes interesting and exciting stories exists.
When we first saw Ganghwa-do house, we concerned about how to save the benefit of the geographical features and the benefit of a house unlike apartment. Of course, we concerned about how to present a various space for the family and to show the viewers the charm of the house.

Neutral Space 1. Parabolic fence
It’s a space where outside can’t see inside, but inside can see outside very well. It’s the outer space, but the entrance door is see-through type, and by wall it gives a neutral space, which gives an inner space effect. Inside, you can view by the see-through wall, retain the light towards the south area, but keeping the privacy.

Neutral Space 2. Fake wall
To make a strange space, fake wall outside of an external wall was applied. It’s a surplus space of double-layered wall. In summer eaves effect, in winter heat insulation effect, and assign terrace function. You might think why building a wall is a big thing, but reality the house has lots of external wind, so by building another wall will help to protect from the wind and heat effect in winter. These spaces in houses are variously utilized, and they can’t be in apartments. We don’t use wood deck on the floor, but emphasize design using special mortar material.

Neutral Space 3. Rift Architecture-
The double-layered mass was applied to the skip-floor type with the double layer, and the concept of the double layer (K Room) was constructed by the mezzanine floor concept and the double-layered mass concept was applied. The separate space was composed of children's exclusive play rooms, which were designated by Kwon Sang-woo and named K room. In fact, Kwon Sang-woo, who cares about children, the K room is filled with his warm heart. Between the mass and the mass, there is a clearance space, and having a skylight, you can see the space inside and outside the stairs. Light shining through skylights reveals inside and allows diverse space experiences. Through a crevice in space, the house will look relaxed. In the end, a crevice is not a mere sight of blocking. Also, it is speculated that this gap will be a space for children's hide and seek.

Medium-place structure-
The structure of the house was constructed with dense wooden structures. As a result, the wooden structure is selected because it’s environmentally-friendly and good to insulation, so low maintenance costs and the construction can be completed in a short time. In one word, it means that they made with a heavy tree structures. Hardwood structure is constructed in advance of construction, whereas wooden structure calculates the structure, precut, and construct from the construction of a prefabricated wooden structure. Especially due to insect conditions, the ground sill was constructed with a chaebol-free tree (Hinoki), which the insects don’t like.

Window design-
In the K Room (Kid’s Room), you can see the windows of the room with skylights facing the south, and can view the sky. When children sit in the room, they can always look up the sky. Also, we installed the window of the veranda in the kitchen and in the main bedroom to feel the atmosphere of the land and enjoy the surroundings. We tried to apply the fullest extent of the privilege living in a house. Doors and windows used PVC double doors, and insulation effect was best. In fact, the fact that PVC is more effective than aluminum is a fact that it is slightly better served.

Inner Path-
There is a path in the house. Coming in from outside, I wanted to show that the house is a small village, and a place where to fulfill self-consciousness. On the other hand, a space that opens a path to the wind is a way of putting a new life into a house, and a long way to breathe home.

Distance-
The ease of laying off from the road has been planned for legal purposes, as well as safety and psychological affluence. By setting back the house a little bit from the road, it will allow enough space for the south, while providing generous glimpses into the village. Of course, I noticed the children's room on the street, and was shocked, so I tried my best.

Sloped Roof-
The K room on the back of the house was covered with sloping roofs. Using perspective techniques, the house was not visible to the public as it displayed a sense of perspective. However, the slope roof was applied as inner part and became a present for children with high levels of space. As much as high levels of space, this space will be the creative space, and is expected to provide children a place of imagination. An artificial olive tree was deliberately planted, and various kinds of amusement facilities were also installed. There is also a blackboard, which is made by Kwon Sang-woo, and the eco-friendly plywood furniture. The floor of cushioning performance was laid down for children not to hurt.
