“Wanås Restaurant Hotel is a cultural and culinary destination but also a place for the soul. Honesty, to ourselves, to our guests and to nature, is central to every meal and every stay at Wanås.”

Wanås Hotel – Nordic design and sustainability

Wanås Hotel is located in an 18th century historic building on the Wanås Estate with a history that goes back to medieval times. Wanås Hotel is surrounded by the renowned sculpture park The Wanås Foundation. The eleven rooms are individually decorated, combining contemporary Nordic design with a few midcentury classics, using local materials and adding warmth with continental influences. Guests are invited to ramble in the sculpture park set in the majestic beech and oak forests. The hotel is small scale, stylish and personal, but also sustainable with local products and local materials sourced from the Wanås Estate such as oak floors and salvaged timber. The whole estate is organically certified and sustainable. Contemporary art, a lobby with a fire place, a sunny courtyard and a mudroom equipped with rubber boots invite guests to venture out or to take a peek in The Art Gallery. Wanås has a long history of inviting guests and art lovers. Wanås Hotel continues this tradition and opens the place for travelers from near and far to experience nature, history and contemporary art around the year. Wanås is situated in the south of Sweden 1,5 h from Malmö/Copenhagen.

Wanås Hotel opened in May, 2017. Prices range from SEK 1650 per person in double room incl. breakfast, or choose The Wanås Package from SEK 2200 per person in double room, including breakfast and farm-to-table dinner at Wanås Restaurant. Full access to The Wanås Foundation – Wanås Konst for all hotel guests. (http://www.wanasrh.se )

Wanås Restaurant – Farm-to-table from the Wanås Estate

The restaurant is completely influenced by its surroundings: the forests teeming with game, mushrooms, berries, and the organic farm that produces milk and meat, as well as vegetables. To serve what is grown, hunted and to harvested is the base for the restaurant. To value, and to be proud of what nature and the farm provide, and the produce of small scale artisanal producers from the area are at the core of every meal. The menu is seasonal and changes depending on availability. There will be signature dishes but certain dishes may vary from one day to the other. Wanås’ own homemade products – cheese, cold cuts, preserves and pickled or fermented vegetables will be on the table for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert.

The spacious restaurant is set in a converted 18th century barn with an open kitchen and a large counter where guests and chefs meet in a relaxed way. Communal, small and large tables provide different opportunities to seat both small and larger parties. Guests gather around the large fireplace during chilly nights and wintertime, and in the summertime tables spill out on to the terrace and lawn overlooking the 15th century Wanås Castle and The Art Gallery that is part of the sculpture park. Guests can count on meeting artist and art lovers that come to develop projects for the art exhibitions or to see the renowned permanent collection of The Wanås Foundation in the landscape around Wanås.

Kristina Wachtmeister – Managing Director

Kristina has lived at Wanås for four years with her young family. Her husband Baltzar is in charge of running the estate. Kristina, an architect, is behind the conversion of the 18th century buildings into a modern hotel and restaurant, as well as the interiors, consulting with friends and colleagues. Working with local producers and sourcing materials from the estate, she has decorated the hotel and the restaurant mixing Nordic design and classics with vintage and contemporary art.

The Wanås Foundation – Wanås Konst

The Wanås Konst Center for Art and Education produces and brings together art that challenges and transforms our view of society. Wanås Konst produces sitespecific, contemporary international art and education with an emphasis on innovation and accessibility.

Contemporary, site-specific installations by internationally established artists have been exhibited and produced at Wanås since 1987. The permanent collection in the sculpture park includes over seventy works that have been created specifically for Wanås Konst by artists like Ann Hamilton, Jenny Holzer, Yoko Ono, Ann-Sofi Sidén and Robert Wilson among others. Each year, thousands of children take part in educational activities such as guided tours and workshops. Wanås Konst is run by the Wanås Foundation.

The organization was founded by Marika Wachtmeister, who initiated the exhibitions in 1987 and created the non-profit The Wanås Foundation that since 1995 runs the sculpture park and collection. Since 2011, The Wanås Foundation has been operated under the joint direction of Elisabeth Millqvist and Mattias Givell. (http://www.wanas.se ).
