Birrificio Italiano is a pioneering reality in the italian handcrafted beer scenario, founded in the 1994 and opened to the public in 1996.  It was the first microbrewery in Lombardy and it became soon one of the most successful and worldwide known realities, thanks to the creativity and the technical talent of the brewer Agostino Arioli.

The new Birrificio Italiano faces, through four big windows, via Ferrante Aporti, just near the Milan Central Station, a street where the buildings austere charm bring the visitors into a nordic and metropolitan atmosphere.

A place out of time that wants to evoke the warm atmosphere of some old bar where people used to meet each other in a convivial and domestic way.

Every single material is chosen in order to create a contemporary scenario where the research for a beer that has its own character, its own soul, can be told. The wooden chairs' different tones reflect the many shades of beers' colours and two big red neon chandelier show their peculiar names.

Just in front of the entrance, on the 1930s original Milanese terrazzo floor, the bar counter is the real focus point of the space, where the beer is served and its story is narrated. The bar height is intentionally lower than usual to encourage the conversation between visitors and to avoid any kind of barrier with the bartender. Warm lights evoke the beer colours and create a cozy atmosphere where people feel comfortable.

But it is also with Lurago's production headquarters that a direct link is to be made, emphasized here by the great photography that brings the fans to the place where, through an almost alchemical process, beers are born.

Birrificio Italiano è una realtà pionieristica nel mondo della birra artigianale italiana fondato nel 1994 e aperto al pubblico nel 1996. E' stato il primo microbirrificio in Lombardia e grazie all’estro e alle capacità tecniche del birraio Agostino Arioli, ha raggiunto un livello di fama e diffusione che lo rendono uno dei nomi più affermati nel panorama craft mondiale.

Per il primo nuovo locale a Milano, DWA Design Studio ha immaginato uno spazio fuori dal tempo che vuole evocare gli interni di certi bar del passato, luoghi di incontro e convivialità.

Il locale si affaccia attraverso quattro grandi vetrine su via Ferrante Aporti, lungo i binari della Stazione Centrale, dove il fascino austero degli edifici riporta a nordiche atmosfere metropolitane.

Ogni materiale è stato scelto per creare uno scenario contemporaneo dove la ricerca per una birra con un proprio carattere, una propria anima, può essere raccontata.

I diversi colori delle sedie in legno e le calde luci ambrate richiamano le differenti sfumature della birra e due grandi lampadari al neon ne riportano i nomi e ne evocano il gusto e la storia, quasi fossero quelli dei personaggi di un romanzo.

Il grande bancone centrale in acciaio vibrato, marmo di Carrara e gres color mattone, è il vero fulcro del locale, dove la birra viene servita e la sua storia raccontata. La sua altezza, volutamente più bassa del normale, favorisce la conversazione tra gli avventori ed evita qualsiasi tipo di barriera tra loro e il bartender.

La ricerca di uno spazio che combini al suo interno forme e materiali utilizzati in modo inaspettato dialoga con le preesistenze di questo luogo, come il pavimento in terrazzo di marmo policromo, tipico dei palazzi milanesi degli anni Trenta.

Ma è anche con la sede di produzione a Lurago che si vuole creare un legame diretto, qui enfatizzato dalla grande fotografia che riporta gli avventori al luogo dove, attraverso un processo quasi alchemico, nascono le birre.
