Traveling with a building : the Dallara Academy

THE SOUL
Each project for us is the encounter between two souls, one of the place and one of the man.
Each project can have these two qualities within itself, or else it must discover them and allow them to emerge for its own reading, writing and will.
In Varano de’ Melegari, with engineer Giampaolo Dallara and his family, intended both as his personal affections and his company, we found ourselves in a unique situation which only needed to be revealed through the occasion of the project, both in the contest phase and in its construction, in order for it to accept its responsibility of telling the places of the soul of a rare and exemplary story which we believe belong to many areas of our Mediterranean territory.

THE SITE
The site of the project consists of a locus of a particular and significant landscape quality.
We wanted to seek a dialog with the area and not propose artificial relationships that break or contrast or of “objet trouvé” within an apparently normal context.
It is necessary to turn one’s gaze, to walk away from the area, to observe it from the different points of view of its “geography” in order to understand its role and soul within the natural balance of nature which becomes landscape.
It is necessary to propose a sweet metamorphosis made of actions that confront themselves with the different natures of the territory: to contain, to host, to inhabit, to welcome.
The project lies on a soft hillside slope that opens to the valley of the Ceno stream, while behind it stands the profile of the hills, with a “rock” at the top that stands as a presence that monitors and observes.
 
THE ORIGIN
The territorial elements with which we are confronted are therefore the apparently horizontal surface of the lot, its ambiguous “simplicity”, the presence of a mulberry tree, green sentinel in dialectic with the rock, the profile of the hills, the agricultural system, the wide trace of the Ceno on the ground and the small rural centers of the Apennines. These are the contemplative elements of the landscape’s perception. It is to these that the project refers itself, now in an intimate way, now collective, now representative and functional, now recognizable and simple.

THE CHAIN OF THOUGHT
The project is born in the same way the design process of Dallara is put in place, in other words, through the aggregation of phases/distinct elements placed side by side in balance, spatially coherent with the nature and the use of the spaces, which, assembled, constitute the project in its whole.
A complex that focuses its attention on the topography of the place, on its integration in the landscape, on its double perception (from the outside and from the inside), and that wants to be a place of research, of project, of encounter, of excellence… A building both fast and slow, silent and sonorous, technological and poetic.

THE LANDSCAPE WITHIN THE LANDSCAPE
We wanted to draw the landscape within the landscape, introducing a new public space, a catalyst for activities, capable of overturning the perceptive modalities of the area that are, to date, the movement of the cars, their speed and the entertainment.
We founded the building at a slightly higher level than the one of the street, creating a first topography which defines its separation from the road and the Academy. A lightly inclined plane that characterises the space of dialog with the location, defining a sequence of thresholds between the natural and the mineral landscape.
The territorial sequence brought us to imagine the area as a green wedge, in which the sinuous movement of the river draws the external spaces and widens its view to involve, in the composition, the adjacent areas which host the historical headquarters of the Dallara company.

BELONGING
The idea that inhabits the project is therefore to create a building that is able to concile the individual identity of the parts that contribute in creating the whole, with a sense of unity of the whole, a landscape within the landscape.
The building thus becomes a living and dynamic element, capable of redefining the location by enriching and re-characterizing it, as it is also endowed with a strong iconicity which makes it a real mineral landmark of the landscape, as well as the rock on the top of the hill to which the project turns its gaze.
Four geometries, Four shapes, Four spaces, Four functions create the unique world of Dallara:

L’ANIMA
Ogni progetto per noi è l’incontro tra due anime, quella del luogo e quella dell’uomo.
Ogni progetto può avere in sè queste due qualità o altrimenti occorre che il progetto le scopra e le faccia emergere per propria lettura, scrittura e volontà.
A Varano de Melegari, con l’ing. Giampaolo Dallara e la sua famiglia, intesa sia come affetti personali che come azienda, ci siamo trovati in una situazione unica che occorreva solo rivelare attraverso l’occasione del progetto sia in fase di concorso che nella sua realizzazione, affinchè esso stesso assumesse in primis la responsabilità di raccontare I luoghi dell’anima di una storia rara ed esemplare che crediamo appartenga a molti ambiti del nostro territorio mediterraneo.

IL LOCUS
Il sito di progetto è costituito da un locus di una qualità paesaggistica particolare e significativa. Abbiamo voluto ricercare un dialogo con il luogo e non proporre rapporti artificiali di cesura o contrapposizione o di “objet trouvé” dentro un contesto apparentemente normale.
Occorre volgere lo sguardo, allontarsi dal luogo, guardarlo da diversi punti di vista della sua “geografia” per comprenderne ruolo e anima all’interno dell’equilibrio naturale della natura che diventa paesaggio.
Occorre proporre una dolce metamorfosi fatta di azioni che si confrontano con le diverse nature del territorio: contenere, ospitare, abitare, accogliere.
Il progetto si adagia su di un morbido declivio collinare appenninico che si apre verso la vallata del torrente Ceno, mentre alle sue spalle si staglia il profilo delle colline, con una “roccia” in alto che si pone come una presenza che vigila e osserva.

L’ORIGINE
Gli elementi territoriali con cui ci si viene a confrontare sono pertanto la superficie apparentemente orizzontale del lotto, la sua ambigua “semplicità”, la presenza di un gelso, sentinella verde in dialettica con la roccia, il profilo delle colline, il sistema agricolo, la larga traccia del Ceno sul suolo ed i piccoli centri rurali appenninici. Sono questi gli elementi contemplativi della percezione del paesaggio. Sono a questi che il progetto si riferisce ora in maniera intima, ora in maniera collettiva, ora rappresentativa e funzionale, ora riconoscibile e semplice.

LA FILIERA DEL PENSIERO
Il progetto nasce nella stessa maniera con cui il processo progettuale di Dallara viene messo in atto, ovvero dall’aggregazione di fasi/elementi distinti ed affiancati tra loro in equilibrio, spazialmente coerenti con la natura e l’uso degli spazi stessi, i quali, assemblati, costituiscono il progetto nel suo insieme.
Un complesso che pone attenzione alla topografia del luogo, al suo inserimento nel paesaggio, alla sua doppia percezione (dall’esterno e dall’interno), e che ha la volontà di essere un luogo di ricerca, di progetto, di incontro, di eccellenza...  un edificio veloce e lento, silenzioso e sonoro, tecnologico e poetico.

IL PAESAGGIO NEL PAESAGGIO
Abbiamo volute disegnare il paesaggio nel paesaggio, introducendo un nuovo spazio pubblico, un catalizzatore di attività, in grado di ribaltare le modalità percettive dell’area che sono, ad oggi, il movimento delle auto, la loro velocità e l’intrattenimento.
Abbiamo fondato l’edificio ad una quota leggermente rialzata rispetto al livello della strada, creando una prima topografia che ne definisce la separazione della strada statale e l’Accademia. Un leggero piano inclinato che definisce lo spazio di dialogo con il luogo, definendo una successione di soglie tra il paesaggio naturale e il paesaggio minerale.
La trama territoriale ci ha fatto immaginare l’area come un cuneo verde, in cui il movimento sinuoso del fiume disegna gli spazi esterni ed allarga la sua visuale fino a coinvolgere, nella composizione le aree limitrofe che ospitano la sede storica dell’azienda Dallara.

APPARTENENZA
L’idea che abita il progetto è quella di creare un edificio capace di conciliare quindi l’identità individuale delle parti che concorrono a creare il tutto, con un senso di unitarietà dell’insieme, un paesaggio nel paesaggio.
L’edifico viene così ad essere un’elemento vivo e dinamico, capace di ridefinire il luogo arricchendolo e ridefinendolo, in quanto dotato anche di una forte iconicità, che lo fa essere un vero e proprio landmark minerale del paesaggio, cosi come la roccia in alto nella collina a cui il progetto volge lo sguardo:

L’ÂME
Chaque projet est pour nous la rencontre de deux âmes, celle du lieu et de l’Homme.
Chaque projet peut renfermer ses deux qualités en lui ; sinon il doit aller à leur rencontre et leur permettre de faire surface et pouvoir ainsi être lu, écrit et réellement voulu.
A Varano de’ Melegari, aux côtés de l’Ingénieur Giampaolo Dallara et sa famille, nous avons été participés à la fois à sa vie personnelle et professionnelle le temps d’un moment unique qui ne cherchait qu’à être révélé par le projet – que ce soit en phase concours ou en chanter. Le projet se doit d’assumer sa responsabilité et d’affirmer les lieux de l’âme d’une histoire rare et exemplaire qui, nous le croyons, appartient également à nombre d’autres endroits faisant partie du territoire méditerranéen.

LE SITE
Le site du projet est un lieu d’une qualité paysagère particulière et significative.
Nous voulions créer un dialogue avec le site et ne pas simplement proposer de relations artificielles aboutissant à des cassures et des contrastes et apparaissant comm des «objets trouvés» dans un contexte à l’apparence normale.
Il est nécessaire de tourner le regard, s’éloigner du site, observer sa «géographie» sous différents points de vue afin de comprendre son rôle et son âme au sein de l’équilibre naturel d’une nature devenant paysage.
Il faut proposer une métamorphose douce faite d’actions qui se confrontent aux différentes natures du territoire : contenir, recevoir, habiter, accueillir.
Le projet se situe sur une colline à la pente douce s’ouvrant sur la vallée du torrent Ceno, derrière laquelle on voit se profiler la forme des collines avec, en leur sommet, un «rocher» qui surveille et observe.

L’ORIGINE
Les éléments territoriaux auxquels nous sommes confrontés sont donc la surface apparemment horizontale du site, sa «simplicité» ambiguë, la présence d'un mûrier, la sentinelle verte en dialectique avec la roche, le profil des collines, le système agricole, la large trace du fleuve Ceno sur le sol et les petits villages ruraux des Apennins. Ce sont les éléments contemplatifs de la perception du paysage. C'est à eux que se réfère le projet, à la fois de manière intime et collective, représentative et fonctionnelle, reconnaissable et simple.

LA CHAÎNE DE LA PENSEE
Le projet est né de la même manière que Dallara pense son processus de conception ; autrement dit, par l’agrégation de phases / d’éléments distincts placés côte à côte en équilibre, spatialement cohérents avec la nature et l’utilisation des espaces, qui, une fois assemblés, constituent le projet dans son ensemble.
Un ensemble qui porte une attention à la topographie du lieu, à son intégration dans le paysage, à sa double perception (extérieure et intérieure) et qui se veut un lieu de recherche, de projet, de rencontre, d'excellence… Un bâtiment à la fois rapide et lent, silencieux et sonore, technologique et poétique.

LE PAYSAGE DANS LE PAYSAGE
Nous avons voulu dessiner le paysage dans le paysage, en introduisant un nouvel espace public, un catalyseur d’activités, capable de bouleverser les modalités de perception du site qui sont, à ce jour, le mouvement des voitures, la vitesse et l’entraînement.
Nous avons ancré le bâtiment à un niveau légèrement supérieur par rapport à celui de la rue, créant une première topographie qui définit sa séparation avec la route et avec l’Academy. Un plan légèrement incliné qui caractérise l'espace de dialogue avec le lieu, définissant une séquence de seuils entre les paysages naturel et minéral.
La trame territoriale nous a amenés à imaginer le site comme un coin de verdure, au sein duquel le mouvement sinueux du torrent dessine les espaces extérieurs et élargit sa vision pour impliquer, dans la composition, les zones adjacentes qui abritent le siège historique de la société Dallara.

APPARTENANCE
L'idée habitant le projet est donc la création d’un bâtiment capable de concilier l'identité individuelle des parties qui contribuent à créer le tout, avec un sentiment d'unité de l'ensemble, un paysage dans le paysage.
Le bâtiment devient ainsi un élément vivant et dynamique, capable de redéfinir le lieu en l'enrichissant et en le caractérisant de nouveau et également doté d'une forte iconicité qui en fait un véritable repère minéral du paysage, tout comme le rocher au sommet de la colline sur laquelle le projet pose le regard.
Quatre géométries, quatre formes, quatre espaces, quatre fonctions créent l'univers unique de Dallara :

- LA RAMPE SEMI-CIRCULAIRE est le territoire / paysage
