BARCELLONA: BARRIO SOCIAL HOUSING | Stefania Dragone

As we were faced by the issue of situating a modern building in the historic reality of the Barrio Gotico of Barcellona, we decided to maintain the shape of the old demolished building, respecting the urban fabric of the area by aligning our block with the Passeig de Colom, the square of the Duke of Medinaceli and its gardens. Furthermore , we used for the  building project , a modern but sober language which would not clash with the reality of the surrounding constructions.

Another conceptual choice that characterizes our project is the creation of a plaza on two levels.

It will be accomplished between the body of the housing and the adjacent wall which will give access to the auditorium and to the restaurant.  The plaza could also be used for outdoor representations.

The space of the square , in elevation, is characterized by the distribution system of housing, with the stairway and the  elevator on the side of the carrer de la Mercè and a series of staggered walkways on each floor. They will ensure the access to the housing by  avoiding introspection.

Behind the wall of the existing building it will be built the distribution walkway and a green vertical climbing system to make the blind sight of the masonry, cooler and pleasant.

From these walkways, made of steel and available to the inhabitants that can also have an overlook with a view of the sea and the Passeig de Colom.

The types of flats  are the same as in the instructions, and are all equipped with double facing, south-west of the Duke of Medinaceli Square and south-east of the square courtyard gardens. They also offer lodges-entry beyond  the kitchen area on the internal side, and other  lodges in the living room and  in some bedrooms.

In structural module that is repeated, 4.10 meters wide, there are three types of units, which are spread over one, two or three floors, depending on the size, with a recurring distribution system as shown in the graphic patterns.

Simplex flat: comprising living-dining-kitchen, bathroom, 1 bedroom.

Duplex flat:   comprising kitchen, living room, 3 bathroom, 2 bedroom.

Triplex flat:   comprising kitchen, living room, 4 bathroom, 3 bedroom.

The facade on the square, exposed to the fiery sun, has been equipped with a system of sliding shutters, remote controlled, which characterizes the prospectus and avoids the afternoon sunshine.

All the services provided for the flats are located on the ground floor, on the floor below, with access from the pedestrian inner square and on two additional underground floors for  the garage.

For the best use of these levels, a sparser concrete structure has been foreseen, that intensifies on the upper floors.  So in  the ground floor, in continuity with the garden square, it was planned a porticoed area where are located the shops, the elevator and the stairs to the auditorium and the access ramp to the garage.

The auditorium, which is situated in the lower floor, includes the hall, with a stage and a projection room, a foyer with a dressing room and bathrooms. From the inner square you have also access to the restaurant, which will  be equipped with outdoor tables, according to the profile of  the courtyard space, decided time by time.

Furhermore, we have projected the roof terrace to be a panoramic sight to the harbour and the sea.

Nell’affrontare il tema dell’inserimento di un edificio moderno nella realtà storica del Barrio Gotico di Barcellona,  ci siamo prefissi di mantenere la sagoma del vecchio edificio demolito, rispettando il  tessuto urbano della zona, allineandoci con il passeig de Colom e con la piazza del duca di Medinaceli e i suoi giardini. Peraltro è stato scelto per l’edificio di progetto, un linguaggio moderno ma sobrio che non stridesse con la realtà edilizia circostante.

Un’ altra scelta concettuale che caratterizza il nostro progetto, è quella della creazione di una piazza su due livelli, tra il corpo di fabbrica degli alloggi e il muro dell’edificio limitrofo,  che da accesso all’auditorium e al locale di ristoro e che può anche essere usata per rappresentazioni all’aperto. Lo spazio della piazza, in elevazione, è caratterizzato dal sistema distributivo degli alloggi, col corpo scale e l’ascensore sul prospetto sul carrer de la Mercè  ed una serie di passerelle sfalsate ad ogni piano, che garantiscono l’accesso agli alloggi evitando l’ introspezione.

A ridosso del muro dell’edificio esistente sarà realizzata la passerella di distribuzione e un sistema di verde verticale rampicante per rendere più fresco e gradevole l’affaccio su la muratura cieca.

Da queste passerelle, realizzate in acciaio e a disposizione degli abitanti, si gode  anche l’affaccio sul mare e sul passeig de Colom.

Le tipologie degli alloggi rispettano quanto indicato dal bando e sono tutte dotate di doppio affaccio, a sud-ovest sui giardini di piazza Duca di Medinaceli e a sud-est sulla piazza-cortile. Sono inoltre dotati di logge-ingresso nella zona cucina, sul prospetto interno, e di altre logge nei locali soggiorno e in alcune camere da letto.

Sul modulo strutturale di una campata, di larghezza netta m.4.10, , si sviluppano le tre tipologie richieste, su 1, 2 o3  piani, con un sistema distributivo ricorrente come evidenziato negli schemi distributivi.

Alloggio simplex  composto da  soggiorno-pranzo-cucina, bagno, 1 camera da letto.

Alloggio  duplex   composto da cucina, soggiorno-pranzo, bagno, 2 camera da letto.

Alloggio  triplex  composto da cucina, soggiorno-pranzo, bagno, 3 camera da letto.

La facciata sulla piazza, esposta al sole radente, è stata dotata  di un sistema di persiane scorrevoli, telecomandate,che caratterizza il prospetto ed evita l’insolazione pomeridiana.

Tutti i servizi dell’intervento sono localizzati al piano terreno, al piano sottostante con accesso dalla piazza interna pedonale e in due ulteriori piani interrati dove sono ubicati i garage.

Per rendere più libero ed agevole l’utilizzo di questi piani, si è pensata una struttura in c.a. più rada che si intensifica nei piani superiori. Quindi al piano terreno, in continuità con i giardini della piazza, è stato prevista una zona porticata dove sono situati gli esercizi commerciali, l’ascensore e le scale per l’auditorium e la rampa di accesso al garage.

L’auditorium al piano ribassato comprende la sala vera e propria, con palcoscenico e sala di proiezione, un foyer con spogliatoio e i bagni. Sulla piazza interna si affaccia anche il ristorante, con annessa cucina e servizi igienici, che sarà dotato anche di tavolini esterni, secondo l’uso che si deciderà di fare dello spazio del cortile.

Inoltre abbiamo previsto la terrazza di copertura praticabile, per usufruire della meravigliosa vista sul mare e sul porto.
