Woldyia Maternity Center | Vilalta Architects

The new maternity center is located at the entrance of the Woldyia city hospital becoming a new gathering area for future mothers. The maternity is divided into two areas: the maternity unit, which is the functional medical space, and the mothers’ waiting area, a temporary hostel for upcoming patients that need a place to stay before they enter in the final stage of their pregnancy.

The maternity unit is composed by 3 rectangular concrete volumes that are connected by glass corridors that bring light inside the main circulation. The volumes contemporary design is combined with traditional details shaped like a local fractal pattern. Electricity is generated with photovoltaic panels making the building independent from the grid and serving its own demands. The mothers’ waiting area is inspired by the traditional Ethiopian tukuls, and it is composed by circular volumes that are arranged with a similar geometry and built with steel and bamboo. Covered open air spaces in both areas take advantage of the climate and reinforce the relationship of the building and the community.

El nuevo centro de maternidad está situado en la entrada del hospital de la ciudad de Woldyia. Será un nuevo espacio de encuentro para las futuras madres dividido en dos áreas: la unidad de maternidad, que es el espacio médico funcional y la zona de espera de las madres, un albergue temporal para las futuras pacientes que necesitan un lugar para alojarse antes de entrar en la etapa final de su embarazo.

La unidad de maternidad está compuesta por 3 volúmenes rectangulares de hormigón que están conectados por pasillos de cristal que dan luz a la circulación principal interior. El diseño contemporáneo de los volúmenes se combina con detalles tradicionales en forma de patrones fractales locales. La electricidad se genera con paneles fotovoltaicos haciendo que el edificio sea independiente de la red y autoabastecerse.

El área de espera de las madres se inspira en las casas tradicionales etíopes, los “tukuls”, y está compuesta por volúmenes circulares que se disponen con una geometría similar, construidos con acero y bambú. Los espacios cubiertos al aire libre aprovechan el clima favorable de la zona y refuerzan la relación entre el edificio y la comunidad.
