Lideta Mercato | Vilalta Architects

Xavier Vilalta´s major project in Ethiopia, Lideta Mercato, has finally topped out in Addis Ababa and is set to open this summer.

The Lideta Mercato was intended to be a shopping mall just like many others in the city of Addis Ababa. A rigorous analysis has identified the main issues of the existing malls in the city, which are commonly built using glazing structures. As a result, the buildings suffer uncomfortable thermal conditions and over-illumination in the interiors. The observation of the Old Mercato, the largest open air market in Africa, was an inspiration to redefine the program of the building, conceiving a multistory contemporary market instead of a conventional shopping mall based on large shops.

The carved volume connects two parallel streets that define the plot of the project. This diagonal connection creates a shortcut for pedestrians and concentrates all the entrances of the building. This path extends to the inclined atrium in the middle of the building, where all floors are connected. Around this void, a different layout of small shops is placed in each floor.

The skin of the building was designed considering the local climate conditions and traditions. The façade acts as a protection from the sun, controlling the natural light and ventilation in the interior spaces. It was built using a lightweight concrete prefab system, and the shapes come from a traditional Ethiopian fractal pattern commonly found in the local fabrics. The passive ventilation system and controlled natural lightening created between the building´s skin and the interior atrium enables the interior space to have an open-air feeling and balanced illumination.

Constantly ceased power supply is one of the main obstacles Ethiopia is facing. This occurring problem was turned into an opportunity by placing circular shaped photovoltaic umbrellas in the rooftop that create nice shaded entertainment areas.

The roof also functions as a rainwater collection system by draining and storing the rainwater in the basement tanks, which later goes through a filtration process to be reused for building´s toilets and taps.

El proyecto más importante de Xavier Vilalta en Etiopía, el Lideta Mercato, acaba de terminar su construcción y abrirá finalmente sus puertas al público de Addis Abeba este verano.

El Lideta Mercato estaba destinado a ser un centro comercial similar a muchos otros existentes en la ciudad de Addis Abeba. A través de un riguroso análisis se identificaron los problemas principales de los centros comerciales de la ciudad,  en su mayoría construídos con fachadas de cristal. Como resultado, son edificios con defiencientes condiciones térmicas y exceso de luz en los interiores.

Las visitas al Antiguo Mercado, el mercado al aire libre más grande de Africa, fueron de gran inspiración para redefinir el programa del edificio, en un mercado contemporáneo multiplanta en lugar de un centro comercial convencional basado en tiendas grandes.

El volumen perforado conecta dos calles paralelas que definen la parcela del proyecto. Esta conexión en diagonal crea un acceso directo para los peatones concentrando todas las entradas del edificio. Este camino se extiende a un atrio inclinado en medio del edificio, que conecta todos los niveles. Alrededor de este vacío,  se distribuyen pequeñas tiendas que van variando la disposición en cada planta.

La piel del edificio fue diseñada teniendo en cuenta las tradiciones y condiciones climáticas locales. La fachada actúa como una protección solar, controlando la luz natural y la ventilación en los espacios interiores. Se ha construido con un sistema prefabricado de hormigón ligero; sus formas provienen de un patrón fractal tradicional Etíope utilizado en los tejidos locales. El sistema de ventilación pasiva y el control de luz natural creado entre la piel del edificio y el atrio interior, generan una sensación de espacio al aire libre con un nivel lumínico equilibrado.

Los cortes de energía electríca son uno de los principales problemas que afronta Etiopía. El proyecto convierte el problema en oportunidad mediante la colocación de protecciones una serie de porches circulares con paneles fotovoltaicos en la azotea creando una zona de entretenimiento protegida del sol. Los parasoles también funcionan como sistema de recogida de aguas pluviales, drenando y almacenando el agua de lluvia en los depósitos del sótano, que más tarde será filtrada para ser reutilizada en grifos y sanitarios del edificio.
