Since Krakow has some of the worst air pollution in all of Europe, the number of people with chronic lung diseases is significantly high. Therefore the need for the Krakow Oxygen Home is ever more prevalent. The key function of the building is to provide a comfortable and supportive environment in difficult times to the lung cancer patients, as well as their friends and families. The choice of this type of design has inspired us because it is addressed to a contemporary problem: the consequences of air pollution on humans. We have investigated how architecture can help to improve the quality of people life and how it can contribute actively to the reduction of air pollution. The project refers to the Maggie's Cancer Caring Centres, support centres for cancer patients in UK. The Centres are particular, because should be a friendly, comfortable and family places. The project must not appear as an hospital setting, but at the same time, as to offer a practical support, emotional and social to those people who are fighting this disease as well as their parents and friends. The centre is about 280 square meters and should be able to provide comfortable stay to 10-15 visitors and 3-5 staff members at a time. It is developed on one level to facilitate the movement of people with disabilities or mobility difficulties. The building is characterized by a common central space with a green insert inside, it allows guests to stay in contact with nature even in winter. The species included are birch trees and ferns, for their air purifying characteristics, present in the local vegetation. This is an opportunity to use architecture and design to create something which could help to heal a hurting community and spread a strong message of hope. In order to be a 'megaphone' of hope, must be an active architecture for sick people and for the prevention to reduce one of the causes of the disease, the air pollution.
