HAIKOU CUSTOM HOUSE | ON DESIGN STUDIO

Hainan Airlines is an airline company based in Haikou, south of China. It is the largest civilian-run air transport company and the fourth-largest airline in terms of fleet size in China. Their idea was to build a Custom house next to the next Airport area. A building housing the offices for the government officials who processed the paperwork associated with importing and exporting goods into and out of a country.

This project began by focusing on the main feature that one of the biggest airline company could possibly boast: the dynamism.
For this reason the project result as a combination of different volumes that interact with each other and create an innovative dialogue with the existing area.

The result is a partition of the area in two main units: on the east side the office building owned by the Airline company which house different functions related to the clearance of the items.

Here we decided to pay homage to the Airlines’ colors: indeed, the warm tonality that covers up the building is the same present in the HNA logo.

The material we used consists in an original combination between glass and a double glazing film produced by M3. This colored film has an essential role in the architectonic project since it helps to create and maintain a cold and sustainable environment in an area where the weather is usually very warm.

The structure on the west side is based on different levels and, thanks to the lush greenery at the top of each layer, it gives the feeling of a vertical forest.
