This project consists of the renovation of a family house, of which the main objective is achieving a passive-house standard. In order to achieve this, we transformed the areas that were once pig sties, haylofts and ovens to liveable spaces designed to the clients idealised living needs. Our priority being; creating a harmonious relationship between wellbeing, comfort, and sustainable as well as energy efficient construction. The renovation focused on keeping the existing skeleton of the building, but changing the shape, interior divisions and dimensions of the building and therefore extending the building to the east. This actually increases the size of the house from 216 square meters to 247.8 square meters.

We carried out a bio-climatic study for the house, in order to determine the best possible orientation of the house. A bio-climatic study allows us to determine the thermal balance of the area; meaning we collect information about sunlight and calculate how to make the best possible use of it during summer and winter.

The thermal insulation of the walls is further aided by trombe walls, which collect the winter sun rays and pass them on to the internal layers of the wall. The wall then expels these rays into the house, and the rays now do not possess the ability to pass through the walls once more. Therefore the warm air is now sealed inside the house.

The typical building materials are recyclable and have a low carbon footprint. Materials used include rammed earth (which is an ancient method of using natural substances to create foundations, floors and walls), shale, ceramic bricks/tabicesa, ceramic tiles and wood. To these elements we added triple glazed windows that allow the interior to achieve a constant temperature of 20ºC throughout the year, successfully lowering the energetic consumption by 80%. The intent of these renovations is to assure a stable, durable and low energy living environment.
