Conversion of an historic Grade 2 Listed Maltings building to three luxury units.

The West wing (left in main photographs) may have proven difficult to convert effectively until the architect convinced the Local Authority that slightly raising the roof to insert a clerestory slot of glazing would enable the floor over to be utilised as profitable space. This horizontal glazing reflects the the grand horizontal landscape views from this commanding hilltop position on that Southern side.

The East side and wing, with Living over bedrooms arrangement, similarly had wonderful views over a large existing pond and greater landscape beyond. Here we arranged for large top hung rooflights, which lift up to form balconies from the upper level Living Areas to give spectacular views from impromtu balconies.

Large bay window arrangements on the internal side to the courtyard gardens, have graceful staggered stairs to directly connect to the private gardens.

The tower rises further to provide a galleried library and study area, lit via a lantern light above and triangular windows to the roof slopes, all above a first floor Living Area with bedrooms below at ground level. As a long wall was immediately adjacent to a public road, we inserted random glass block arrangements discretely, into the elevation to supplement the light from formal screened windows and so enlivening the spaces with direct natural light, without exposing the occupants to unwarranted view.
