HMS President(1918) | Vaughan Keal
London / United Kingdom
Vaughan Keal became 'architect' for this iconic landmark on the Thames in London near St Pauls Cathedral in 1991, while he was a student of architecture at The Royal College of Art.
It involved the £1.5million conversion, from Royal Navy Reserve Vessel to the HQ of the International Charity Inter-Action, with a scheme to reinforce Lord Rogers' river park idea, adding a submarine to the war memorial nearby. The works included the total refurbishment stripping asbestos initially, raising standard to full public health level, providing new gangways, extending handrails, adding fire-escapes, inserting recording studios, dealer rooms, offices, toilet suites, maintenance and revamping the wardroom and enterainment areas.
The project lasted 4 years and Vaughan's office was the upper wheelhouse during the period. Subsequently the dazzle painting has been undertaken and the vessel returned refreshed.
