Country Villa | Vaughan Keal
Southwold / United Kingdom
This project took inspiration from the famous New York Five international modernists whom developed Le Corbusier principles. Like Villa Savoye, by the latter it employs the upper courtyard concept to have a raised outdoor courtyard aera with grand views across the landscape, in this position, to Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Taking the existing footprint of the previous buiding and some walls, for economy, the original cottage with pitched roof is transformed into a highly stylish white modernist villa in the landscape. Rationalising the layout for drive approach, 'porte cochere' woodstore, bedrooms facing East lawns with view over water meadows, the living spaces wrap around the South West sides breaking out to swimming pool and BBQ terracing West, with stunning views all round.
An enclosed external addition, rounded glass stair tower leads to the upper floor, allowing the villa to have rental value with below and upper level units. The first floor having a self contained master bedroom suit and 'family-room' arrangement of open plan living depending on how the whole is used. The upper level having a self-enclosed courtyard, elevated to take in the breath-taking views in 'Constable' style of distant landscapes over rivers and marshes, copses, gentle rises and woodland, with those big Suffolk skies.
