Crystal Barn | Vaughan Keal
Norwich / United Kingdom
Crystal Barn. Eco self sufficient living. Coated in shades of black glass and rubber, this is a home inside a conservatory barn, with a 'seasonal thermal storage system'.
The external panels to the North long side, are mainly rubber coated, progressively changing with glass panels East/West and glass panels mainly to South. The glass has differing shades depending on it's function adjacent to the areas it encloses. Insulation, is thick straw bale walls inside the crisp shell, some exposed, some coated with clay renders for finish effects.
On the sketch, the pink area is higher temperature habitable, the sand areas lower temperature conservatory areas and the blue a swimming pool and thermal mass for the heat store. Vegetables and fruitis are grown in the conservatory areas all year round and plants filter air. One end has doves with songbirds and there are fish in indoor pools.
Taking advantage of the landscape position & outdoor air speeds at the ridge, standard fans are purchased and set along the whole ridge length, to generate energy, along with both PV and water based solar panels.....all energy to be stored in both the insulated basement and in Tesla batteries for full off-grid living.
This barn was a scheme for a PPS7 application by an entrepeneur, just outside Norwich.
