Although all the standards of a traditional office building are there in the way it functions and is laid out, the architectural choice of the envelope has been determined by the dizzying amount of movement around the building.
Building A11 benefits from a particularly privileged location, located as it is in Paris’ 13th arrondissement on the second section of Avenue de France, leading
to the Austerlitz train station. As in the Haussmann tradition, its corner location enhances its role as an urban hinge and landmark.

Another particularity of the site is its being built above an SNCF tunnel and along the railway tracks which
were determinant factors in the project’s design. This 8-storey building emerges from the context’s importance, and its weight and loads carried to the ground condition the choice of a metal structure offering the benefit of lightness and longer reach.

Movement on all sides from the vehicles and pedestrians on Avenue Mendès-France to the trains and the overhead metro line.
The general design has been inspired by it, based on a horizontal wall pattern, alternating full aprons with aligned windows.
This initial configuration is then filled out by a folding envelope of aluminum tubing that covers some of the windows, thus turning the continuity of the horizontal stratification into dotted lines. The tubular pattern creates a virtual volume that waves like a flag, like a metal cloud, creating depth and shade. This system generates a moiré or Gauss effect that changes as one walks past. With aluminum being very sensitive to light variations, the building changes in the viewer’s eye from matt to satin, from sparkling to evanescent and constantly
plays with its limits and contours.

Le Bâtiment A11, bénéficie d’une situation particulièrement privilégiée, situé à Paris 13, sur le second tronçon de l’avenue de France qui conduit vers la gare d’Austerlitz.
Comme dans la tradition haussmannienne, sa position d’angle amplifie son rôle d’articulation urbaine et de repère, Enfin, son implantation au dessus d’un tunnel de la SNCF, le long des voies ferrées est l’autre particularité du site qui a fortement conditionné le processus de projet.
L’édifice de 8 niveaux est véritablement issu de la prégnance de ce contexte, son poids, les descentes de charges ont conditionné le choix de la structure métallique qui offre l’avantage de la légèreté et de plus longues portées.

Si l’on retrouve tous les standards d’un édifice de bureaux classique dans son fonctionnement et dans sa partition, le choix de l’enveloppe architecturale est portée par l’hyper présence du mouvement autour de la parcelle.

Celui des véhicules et des piétons sur l’avenue Mendès France, celui des trains, celui des rames du métro aérien, tout n’est que mouvement. La composition générale s’en inspire, elle est basée sur une division horizontale des façades, alternant allèges pleines et fenêtres filantes.

Cette découpe primaire est ensuite complétée par une enveloppe plissée formée de tubes d’aluminium qui passe devant certaines fenêtres et transforme la continuité de la stratification horizontale, en lignes pointillées.

La trame tubulaire génère un volume virtuel qui ondule comme un drapeau, comme un nuage de métal, dégageant une profondeur et des ombres portées. Ce système crée un moirage, un effet de Gauss dont la perception se modifie en marchant.

L’aluminium étant un matériau très sensible aux variations de la lumière, l’édifice paraît parfois mat, satiné, étincelant, ou évanescent, jouant sans cesse avec ses limites et ses contours, avec la perception.
