Simple volumes and walls contain the edge of the woods and present the long panoramic view across the field and over Eggomogin reach to the islands of the coast. The site is a large parcel, and a very secluded one, high on a ridge, several miles inland from the shore.  In the center is an expansive and sloping sward with exposed bedrock interspersed throughout, surrounded by a predominantly spruce forest.  Previous owners had clear cut a pocket in the forest, and at one location, the corner of the pocket intersects the edge of the tree line and engages the field.  It is at the overlap of these two conditions, stretched out along the edge between the regenerating forest and the field, where the house was sited.  A terrace on the southwest corner sits atop a long concrete wall that clearly establishes a crisp boundary between building and site.

The building’s form is derived from agrarian vernacular, and is an assembly of three distinct gabled volumes joined by low flat roof connectors that serve as entry and circulation between the parts.  Dark stained, vertical, board siding and dark metal roof help the buildings recede into the landscape, while the horizontality of the aluminum frame storefront windows stretch out the horizon from the inside.

Interiors are organized around this simple linear circulation pattern.  The main spaces open up and expand into one another and to the outdoors, while the more private spaces contract and feel self-contained, but still maintain a strong visual connection to the landscape as the horizontality of the windows stretch out the horizon from the inside.
