“Make it look one hundred years old”.

It was this sentence from our clients that provided the conceptual cornerstone for Stomping Ground Brewery.  Not only was the space to feel aged and preserved, but it also had to echo working class life of the industrial revolution. Major architectural feats of that time such as Antwerp train station and large scale factories in turn inspired many of the motifs in Stomping Ground.

Finishes like blackened steel, fluted glass panels and recycled brickwork were used. The bar displays a large suspended beer menu almost like destinations at central station. Vintage cues of the joinery become more delicate and nuanced here with mock drawers reminiscent of maybe a tailor or craftsman’s workshop. In addition along the brewery wall we commissioned a woodworker to make replica vintage tram seats.

We tackled aging the space as if it was a finish itself, so we had to approach the dressing almost like set design. An artist was commissioned to paint deterioration onto the lining board cladding and we went to lengths to make sure all timbers were stained, beaten and distressed like you would see on a one hundred year old piece of joinery.
