Surrounded by vineyards and wheat fields, Valbuena Monastery is a medieval building today converted into “Valbuena Monastery – Castilla Termal Hoteles”, in Valladolid (Spain).

This 12th century gem – uniquely situated in the little hamlet of San Bernardo (Valbuena del Duero) and hidden at the bottom of a valley – had been practically abandoned despite having been declared a Monument of National Cultural and Artistic Interest in 1931 until, in 2015, it was restored and extended by the company Castilla Termal.

The restoration and extension work was carried out in different stages by architects

Lorenzo Marqués de la Riva, from BDM architects’ studio, and María Jesús de Pablo. In the creation of the spa, one particularly noteworthy part was the conversion of Saint Peter’s Chapel into a deluxe swimming pool. For this purpose, porcelain tiles by URBATEK were used for the walls and stairs of its wet areas, since they blend in to perfection with the original stone.

The hotel has been rounded off with new wellness facilities and a big thermal pool, surrounded by extra-thick URBATEK porcelain tiles in a raised access floor system by Butech.

This unparalleled setting is the perfect place to get to know the legendary designation of origin to which one of Spain’s most internationally famous wines belongs, Vega Sicilia.
