COIMA Headquarters - Porta Nuova Milano | MCA - Mario Cucinella Architects

The project proposal for the new COIMA Headquarters completes the area of Porta Nuova, setting two essential objectives: first and foremost, it is a highly representative intervention to support managerial activities in the area, and secondly, it connects the urban fabric with the adjacent park serving as both the access door and scenic backdrop of the park. Based on this point of view, the project explores the theme of synthesis between the “natural” and “artificia” within a formal and environmental context. A comparison between the scale of the intervention and the existing volumes suggested the search for a solution characterized by strong aesthetic and volumetric unity. The new building, with its 2,400 square meters of gross surface area, was conceived as a unique example in which simplicity, rhythm and essentiality – all features of Milan's great architectural culture – are the founding principles of the complex: a transparent greenhouse on the edge of the park, enclosed on the northern and southern sides by two sheets of bark, which define the spatial and material perception. The image of the bark is achieved thanks to the two laminated wooden beam systems that enclose and protect the volume of glass and steel, emphasizing the continuity between interior and exterior, defined by the alternation of full and empty spaces. The regular repetition of the vertical wooden elements, along the two paths towards north and south, continues over the west front, freeing and opening up the adjacent public space.

The intention is not to propose another “character” in a place where the existing architecture is already strong and full of symbolism but rather to create a project that could be alternately flexible and reconfigurable in offices and commercial spaces, emphasizing the relationship between the external and internal environments: in particular, the adjacent location of the park to the north is exploited by way of a square, which becomes an important portal of access for visitors on the way in and out.

La proposta progettuale per l’edificio della nuova Sede COIMA completa l’area di Porta Nuova ponendosi un duplice obiettivo: essere un intervento altamente rappresentativo a supporto delle attività direzionali dell’area e collegare il tessuto urbano con il parco adiacente configurandosi come porta di accesso e quinta scenica del parco. Partendo da questo presupposto il progetto esplora il tema della sintesi tra ‘naturale’ e ’artificiale’ sotto il profilo formale e ambientale. Il confronto fra la scala dell’intervento e le preesistenti volumetrie ha suggerito la ricerca di una soluzione caratterizzata da una forte unitarietà estetica e volumetrica.
Il nuovo edificio, con i suoi 2.400 mq di SLP, è stato concepito come un unicum in cui semplicità, ritmo ed essenzialità, caratteri di una grande cultura architettonica milanese, sono i principi genetici del complesso: una serra trasparente sul lembo del parco, racchiusa sui fronti nord e sud da due fogli di corteccia, che ne definiscono la percezione spaziale e materica. L’immagine della corteccia è raggiunta grazie ai due sistemi di travi in legno lamellare che racchiudono e proteggono il volume in vetro ed acciaio, enfatizzando Il rapporto di continuità tra interno ed esterno definito dall’alternanza di pieni e vuoti. La ripetizione regolare degli elementi verticali lignei, lungo le due traiettorie divergenti nord e sud, prosegue oltre il fronte ovest, liberandosi ed aprendosi nello spazio pubblico adiacente.
L’ intenzione non è riproporre un altro “personaggio” in un luogo dove le architetture presenti sono già forti e cariche di simbolismi ma di creare un progetto flessibile e riconfigurabile alternativamente in spazi uffici e commerciali, enfatizzando la relazione fra gli ambienti esterni ed interni: è sfruttata in particolare l’adiacenza a nord con il parco attraverso una piazza che diventa il portale di accesso per e da esso.
