Beachbody Headquarters

dTank was selected to come up with a flexible furniture solution for Beachbody, creators of such popular fitness and weight loss programs such as P90X and Insanity. The project called for a system that could accommodate rapid employee growth and adapt in their other facilities across the country. For their California headquarters, dTank teamed with design firms Wolcott Architecture | Interiors for their Santa Monica location and Kamus + Keller for their El Segundo location. Both projects were managed by Debbie Lengele of Lengele & Associates LLC.

As their staff continued to expand, employees needed to be able to implement immediate changes to the space when needed. Therefore, components were made mobile with detachable dry erase divider panels and casters added to workstation returns. Extra space for new hires was anticipated in the design of the underside of the workstations that cantilevered on a center structural spine and prevented blockage of intermediate support. In addition, each component contained a limited number of standardized multipurpose parts that could be utilized across all furniture systems.

Power and data were aesthetically concealed within work surfaces, which contained a pullout sliding mechanism that all wiring and technology ran through. As a key multi-functional element of the space, Beachbody’s branded power poles served a similar function, with technology integrated within the structure that extended from the ceiling. One side showcased posters while flat screen mounts flanked the opposite side.

A uniform identity spanned their material choices and architectural elements, both of which were echoed in the design of the furniture. Adhering to their business model of natural ingredients and healthy living, Beachbody preferred renewable materials like bamboo, which was inset to the ice stone conference table in Santa Monica. A circular motif in the architecture of the overhead light in Beachbody’s El Segundo location was translated in the round and donut-shaped tables as well as the circular patterned textile found on the banquette and reception seating.

For their product development lab, storage areas were clad in a seamless laminate that coordinated with some of the finishes present in the rest of the space while also allowing for the surface to be cleaned without damage. A corian-like countertop on the center island satisfied a similar need and added a polish to the utilitarian setting.

Addressing the client requirements informed a design that was both efficient and on-brand. The multipurpose products incorporated both strategically placed branding elements and an economy of space that allowed for the company’s continued growth and shifting dynamics.
