Milano 3 is being planned and constructed by Edilnord Progetti Spa, the architecture firm led by Giancarlo Ragazzi, using the same principles as were involved in the planning of Milano 2, designed and constructed by the same group of architects nearly 10 years before. It is located in the town of Basiglio on the south-west side of Milan, 13 km from the city-centre. It hosts 10.500 people and 3.300 housing units, and includes a Business Centre for 4.000 people that extends over a surface of 15 Ha. Furthermore “Milano 3” has a day care centre, 3 nursery schools, an elementary school, a secondary school and several playgrounds. A Sporting Club with more than 20 tennis courts, an indoor swimming pool, an outdoor swimming pool, gyms, a physiotherapy centre and a public soccer field was among the first features constructed. There is also a shopping mall with over 40 stores, including a supermarket, boutiques, banks, hotel and public services. The town centre includes a city hall, an auditorium, a civic centre, and a library. As well as Milano 2, Milano 3 has a Road System that allows pedestrian pathways and bicycle paths to not cross the streets. Landscape: The landscape of Milano 3 is in harmonious balance between nature and architecture, where greenery maintains its essential role. Greenery extends over a surface of about 850.000 m², an average of 80 m² of green space per person. The Road System: Milano 3, as well as Milano 2, is an example of new town where cars are strictly separated from pedestrian walkway and bicycle pathway. In total, there are 10 km of vehicle roads and 15 km of pedestrian and bicycle pathways. Housing: The provision of housing cannot be considered independently from its urban context. In Milano 3 the relationship between housing and facilities (schools, shops, green areas, playgrounds, sports centres and amusement areas) is strongly emphasized. The colour of the houses, ranging from ochre to brown, refers back to the traditional colours used in Italian architecture. Schools: The schools were planned according to the latest pedagogical principles. The nursery school buildings are one story, primary and secondary school buildings are two stories. They all have large internal and external common areas and sport and community facilities including gyms and basketball and volleyball courts. Playgrounds: Children can play in large and very well equipped areas in Milano 3. You can find sand pits, roller skating rings, a little fort apache and children facilities. Sports: A large provision of sports facilities throughout Milano 3 offers the possibility of training to people of all ages. Private and Public Sport facilities mainly have been built in the “heart” of the community, and allow for different levels of sporting activities. Town Centre: Milano 3 is an entertainment, commercial, and business centre for the entire south-west side of Milan. It includes an exceptional complex of buildings devoted to commerce, restaurants, leisure and entertainment, religious centre, offices and conference rooms, town hall, auditorium, public library, not just for the residents of Milano 3 but for the entire region. Municipal Services and Infrastructure: The implementation of modern technology and environmental friendly concepts are some of the elements characterizing the technical services of the new community that contribute positively to a safeguard of the natural environment in the long term. As well as Milano 2, Milano 3 is considered to be one of the few great example of “new town” that still today attracts many delegations from all over the world.
