MUGU HOUSE | Studio Malka Architecture

Located at Mugu Point California, fifty miles away from Los Angeles where Malka Architecture just opened its new studio, the Mugu House is nested on Malibu’s Hills porosities.

The project benefits from the existing topography of the actual site ; the result is a zero impact on the surrounding nature, an ecological project in immersion with the rock, its vegetation and its thermal variations.

The Mugu House embodies a return to the roots of architecture in connection with the natural elements, a dialogue with the mountain and its troglodyte architecture.

This lightweight architecture is constituted of prefabricated alveolar concrete made from primary materials available locally such as sand and aggregates, with a very low cement content (7%), which reduces 28 times the CO2 emissions and the ecological footprint in comparison with the traditional concrete.

Easy to build and to remove, this site allows a quick, inexpensive, clean, sustainable and waste-free installation, with manual installation.

Built with very few partitions, the rock determines the geometry of the interior spaces.

The flank of the uninterrupted mountain extends inside each room, reminding us that we are the guests of nature.

Thus the habitation is in constant connection with the organic nature and its surrounding context through the hill, its lichens, succulents and other vegetables.

Thanks to its large bay windows, the main façade bathes the inhabitant in the ocean, offering a long stretched framing on the Californian panorama, creating an inner echo of  horizontal landscape .

The “double skin” consists of a system of wooden sunscreens; this Amerindian tribal pattern is composed of removable triangular units, generating different types of solar occultations.

The architecture of the Mugu House links both nature and history, sustainability and territory: the house revisits the original shelter’s myth with a vernacular dialogue with the mountain, and embodies a return to the roots of the American Continent.

Situé à Mugu Point, en Californie, à une cinquantaine de kilomètres de Los Angeles où Malka Architecture vient d’installer sa nouvelle agence, la Mugu House se pose sur les aspérités des Collines de Malibu.

Le projet tire parti de la topographie existante du site: le résultat est un impact zéro sur la nature environnante, un projet écologique en immersion avec la roche, sa végétation et ses variations thermiques.

C’est un retour aux origines de l’architecture, en lien avec les éléments naturels, un dialogue avec la montagne et ses architectures troglodytes.

Cette architecture légère est faite de béton alvéolaire préfabriqué réalisé à partir de matériaux primaires disponible au niveau local tel le sable et les granulats avec une très faible dose de ciment (7%) réduisant ainsi l’empreinte écologique par rapport au béton traditionnelle de 28 fois, limitant de facto les émissions de CO2.

Facilement montable et démontable, ce chantier permet une pose rapide, peu onéreuse, écologique, propre et sans déchets, avec une mise en place manuelle.

Agrémenté de très peu de cloisons, la roche détermine la géométrie des espaces intérieurs. Plus qu’un fond de scène, le flanc de la montagne ininterrompu se prolonge à l’intérieur de chaque pièce, nous rappelant ainsi que nous sommes les invités de la nature.

L’habitation est en connexion constante avec la nature organique et son contexte environnant, au travers de la colline, ses lichens, succulents et autres végétaux.

Grâce à ses larges baies vitrées, la façade principale baigne l’habitant dans l’océan, offrant un long cadrage étiré sur le panorama californien, recréant ainsi une horizontalité paysagère en écho intérieur.

La double peau est constituée d’un système de brise-soleils bois ; ce motif tribal amérindien est composé d’unités triangulaire amovibles permettant différents types d’occultations solaires.

L’Architecture de la Mugu House lie à la fois nature et histoire, écologie et territoire: en revisitant d’abord le mythe de l’abri originel dans son dialogue vernaculaire avec la montagne et en incarnant le retour aux sources du continent Américain.
