London based practice CIAO - Creative Ideas & Architecture Office, renovated a 35 sqm studio flat in Islington to adapt around the occupants needs and accommodate up to 4 people.

The housing market has changed over the last decade and the constant increase of prices has driven young buyers to look for smaller homes or relocate outside central London.

The client’s request, was to design a compact flat where he could live comfortably even when his family and friends are visiting, without having to compromise on space.

The open plan layout eliminates unnecessary boundaries, allowing light to flow inside. Combined with high ceilings, it contributes to the feeling of being in a much bigger space than the actual foot print of the flat.

The bespoke furniture adapts to space and function, like the second bed neatly hidden under a raised floor that also helps to access the mezzanine storage space above the bathroom. When not used, the second bed leaves space to a clever home office. The raised floor also accommodates the main bed, which is separated from the living area by a bookshelf featuring sound proof felt panels, to improve the acoustic comfort. Extra storage space is provided by the in-built wardrobe in the living area and the drawers hidden under the steps.

The spacious and fully equipped diagonal kitchen, sets a strong mark through the entire length of the flat. This virtual line defines one side from the other without physically separating spaces. The contrast of materials also helps to divide the functions without interrupting the space. The exposed bricks wrap the living room while the handcrafted birch plywood defines the night area. The kitchen is made from corten steel panels covered by a hard wearing composite worktop with a rusted metal effect.

The continuity of the space is enhanced by the woven vinyl flooring, which covers most of the surface, including the bathroom, giving a pleasant feel while walking bear foot.
