GREEN BUILDING PROJECT

RESTORATION AND EXTENSION OF THE OLD BUILDING
FOR THE NEW OFFICES OF A PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY

In 2010 the young pharmaceutical company “Pharmanutra” needed to extend and relocate its offices, into an old building in North West of Pisa.

The building is similar to an old farmhouse, but it is actually a recently creation, it is a restoration of a warehouse into a stylish “farmhouse”.

The spaces of the building weren’t suitable for the request of the company, as the two levels of the building were connected only by an external stair, and there wasn’t internal connection.

The solution that I found for the request of the company,  was the construction of a greenhouse, the internal restoration and the construction of a cellar.

The greenhouse has been “simply put” on the existing building, inside it, I built a new stair which connects the three levels of the building and works as access corridor for the spaces of the first floor.

Inside the greenhouse a system of brise-soleil, with electronic control, permits sun insulation and the control of hot and fresh air.

The system allows for a big energy saving.

For me another important thing was the permeability of the external spaces, realized by removing the old side-walks and asphalt and creating green areas and a draining floor.

The first project foresaw a total energy saving by means of solar panels, home automation building system, geothermal heating system, complete insulation of the building and reuse of wastewater, but I realized only the greenhouse, the inert wall and an efficient condensation heating system, would allow for saving a lot of energy.

I believe this is a little, but very important project, because it is a good example of energetic renewal. Nowadays it’s essential to refurbish all the old buildings, making them more efficient to save energy and not to pollute.
