The impetus behind the concept for a new corporate office in suburban Dayton, Ohio, was the owner’s love of adventure, aviation and the spirit of collaboration. The extraordinary design of the Connor Group headquarters in Miamisburg, Ohio (USA) makes it truly striking. In a statement on architect Moody Nolan’s website, the new corporate headquarters’ iconic form is described as a double-loaded office bar wrapping around itself and uncoiling. Inspiration is gleaned from the notion of motion and lift, trajectory and momentum. The building’s “outer public skin” is clad in folded and triangulated sections of ALUCOBOND® naturAL Brushed and strip windows. “The triangulations allow the building to twist and lean as momentum and movement build and pull around the perimeter to the high point,” according to the architect’s statement. “The basic design parameter for this building was to provide every office with access to natural light,” according to architect Daniel R. Pickett, who said virtually all employees at The Connor Group work in private offices. The development of the building’s unique design started with a fairly simple diagram of offices arranged around a central atrium. The diagram was then altered dramatically. The final design features no curved lines on the exterior and few right angles. Drawing upon the owner’s desire for collaboration, the design team involved students from the AIA-founded Charter High School for Architecture and Design (CHAD) of Philadelphia in intense workshops devoted to planning and design. This involvement of bright, young minds provided the design team with unique feedback during the early formative stages of the process.
