Fornebuporten is one of the office and residential clusters which has popped up over the last two decades on the grounds of what used to be Oslo airport. The site, at the entrance to the Fornebu peninsula, is a gateway to this flourishing new district. The architects at Dark Arkitekter conceived the office and commercial complex at Fornebu to be a magnet for knowledge-based enterprises and oil and offshore intelligence. Inspired by the offshore industry, the buildings cantilever outwards from the first floor, creating the illusion of floating over the square and surrounding landscape. Two volumes border a public plaza whose central element is a sunken atrium. The majority of the project is accessible to the public: the plaza scattered with sculptures, gardens and urban furniture, the inviting cafés, bakeries and restaurants located on the predominantly glass-fronted ground floor or the retail spaces and gym around the central atrium. The aim has been to create a welcoming Scandinavian atmosphere with a clear layout and well-defined functions. The exterior cladding in ALUCOBOND® provides pure, modern elegance; the indoor materials have warm and tactile qualities. The ground floor is designed to be a friendly, transparent space, with a continuous glass curtain wall from floor to ceiling. The office accommodation seem to hover above public restaurants, coffee shops and cafeterias on the ground floor. The underside of the “hovering” volumes resembles a playful checkerboard cladding - the result of the building’s façades folding under the cantilevers. The combination of ALUCOBOND® in naturAL Brushed and Dark Grey Metallic creates a fascinating play of lights on the façade and the cantilevered checkered pattern.
