Converted from a former post office administrative building into a student hostel and social housing, the 70s building in Rue de Bercy, in the centre of Paris, underwent an astonishing makeover. The complex, which used to look quite hostile and bleak, now features an  eye-catching metallic shimmer. The architects, Audren et Schlumberger, Paris carried out “precision surgery” in the process of dismantling the building. The massive volume took on a completely new appearance. The modern rear-ventilated façade in ALUCOBOND® Gold Metallic and anodized look covers the building like a second skin. The new envelope is not only an extraordinary design, it also provides efficient and elegant protection from the sun. The window shutters integrated into the façade can be rotated and, depending on the position of the sun, can be set flush or at right-angles to the smooth façade surface. The façade itself is like an outer shell made up of individual elements and randomly positioned, protruding window boxes. Bright, flamboyant colours shine out from the interior of these boxes. The innovative envelope is completely in line with the building’s function, the use of modern sustainable materials to create an ecological, sustainable construction which fulfils the “Plan Climat de la ville de Paris” with an energy consumption of 80 kWh/m²/a. The housing complex accommodates 202 student rooms and 124 social flats. A large interior courtyard, which is partially green and leafy, ensures residents can enjoy a high quality of life. The interior wooden façade is clad in larch, ideally complementing the exterior one in ALUCOBOND® Gold Metallic and anodized look.
