Henning Larsen’s commission was a demanding one: build a world-class opera house with excellent acoustics and give artists and staff the best possible facilities – a place whose architecture makes visiting “The Opera” an experience in itself. The most characteristic feature is the immense 90 x 158 metre flat roof, cantilevering 32 metres out over the arrival plaza with a diagonal cantilever of 38 m in the corners. To achieve a light, floating impression, the roof thickness is graduated from three metres in the centre to a mere twenty centimetres at the edges. The substructure for the 9.000 m² roof soffit is a cold-formed, thin gauge steel structure clad with matt ALUCOBOND® panels.
