The Location
Mâcon is an elegant town straddling the banks of the Saone and gateway to Burgundy for those arriving from the south of France. Its historic centre is a maze of narrow streets which wind around noble historical and religious buildings. One of these streets, a stone's throw from Saint Pierre’s Church, was chosen as the perfect location for the new "Atrium - Spa & Beauté" wellness centre.

The SPA
Built on two levels, Atrium welcomes its guests on the ground floor, in a stylish "New-Baroque" salon. This area is devoted to facial, hand and hair beauty treatment.
The staircase in white, marble effect porcelain stoneware tiles, on the left side of the building, leads down to the basement, the very heart of the spa, where a “magical”, medieval atmosphere provides guests an unexpected mystical feeling. The owners decided to build the most valuable area of the spa in the basement, despite the technical and construction problems involved.
The basement is in fact characterised by a vaulted roof entirely made of stone.
Aesthetically it recalls an ancient crypt and it is quite plausible to think that it served precisely this function in the past, given the proximity of the church of St. Pierre.
The room height is particularly limited, down to about one meter and twenty centimetres at its lowest point. Given the lack of significant openings, the environment posed major technical difficulties and called for special design solutions for the installation of the necessary air conditioning units; all without ruining such a characteristic setting.
The owners therefore decided to cross national borders and call on Studio Alberto Apostoli, an internationally renowned company specialising in the design of spas and wellness centres. The meeting took place in Paris, during EquipHotel, where Apostoli was present as ambassador for Italy.

The Concept
To highlight the ''existing” aspect, giving expressive power to the project.
The Concept proposed by Alberto Apostoli immediately met the expectations of the Customer, managing to combine technical and aesthetic requirements, through an intuitive combination of MEP systems and scenic elements. The project features a long curved corridor leading to the wet zone, on one side, and to the treatment rooms, on the other. This corridor was also used to obtain a structure to house all the air ducts and outlet nozzles, hidden behind a backlit curtain. Using a small graphic expedient, the outlets blend into the curtain itself and disappear in the decor reminiscent of the typical vineyards of Mâcon, famous for its Chardonnay. Positioning the nozzles in this way instead of in the ceiling avoided any further reduction in the available height.

Zoning
The spa area occupies a space of about 270 square meters. The wet area includes a Finnish sauna and a steam bath, almost entirely made of glass. Then we find a hydro massage area with emotional shower and a relaxation area. The treatment area has two single rooms and a double room. A small tea corner completes the environment, provided with a cabinet that seems to float in the air, thanks to underside lighting.

Light and colors
Great attention was given to the lighting design, crucial to solve difficulties related to this particularly narrow area. Lighting is almost totally indirect, obtained using RGB strip LEDs, controlled by a DALI system and positioned along the profile of the vault in order to highlight its curvature.
To balance the weight of the stone facing and make the setting more refined, Alberto Apostoli has worked using black and white, inserting some details in gold.

Materials and equipments
Alberto Apostoli has attempted to privilege Italian products; ceramics, mosaics, paints and even the treatment beds are all "Made in Italy".
Some items were custom-designed such as the big lamp which incorporates the spa logo, positioned in the relaxation room. All furniture is customised, like the many mirrors and large glass surfaces, necessary to allow the environment to "breathe".
Refined use is made of an elliptical mosaic which accompanies guests towards the wet zone, merging with some fine porcelain stoneware elements specially designed and highlighted by floor lighting fixtures.

"from the first site inspection I instantly realised the great expressive and design potential of this area but, at the same time, the remarkable complications for plant and structures.
We tried to create emotion through a project that focussed on a simple yet not trivial layout and considerable efforts in terms of lighting, material research and attention to technical detail, typical of our professional profile.
What is especially satisfying in the result is the mix of pre-existing stone and contemporary materials, managed through a thoughtful creative process. The owners trusted us entirely in our thinking and this led to a major achievement from the point of view of consistency in both style and technology. Which goes to show that even in small projects, with due attention and richness, considerable results can be achieved in terms of creativity and well-being”.

La Location
Macon è un’elegante cittadina adagiata lungo le rive del fiume Saona; è la porta della Borgogna per chi arriva dal sud della Francia. Il suo centro storico è un dedalo di viottoli che si snodano attorno a nobili edifici storici e religiosi. Ed è proprio in una di queste stradine, a due passi dalla chiesa di St. Pierre, che è stata individuata la location ideale per il nuovo centro di estetica e benessere “Atrium – SPA & Beauté”.

La SPA
Disposta su due livelli, Atrium accoglie i suoi ospiti al piano terra, in un raffinato salone dallo stile “New-Barocco”; quest’area è dedicata ai trattamenti estetici per viso, mani e capelli.
Dalle scala in gres bianco effetto marmo, posta sul lato sinistro dell’edificio, si scende verso l’interrato, vero cuore del centro; un ambiente dall’atmosfera “magica”, medievale, che offre agli ospiti un’inaspettata sensazione mistica.

Nell’interrato la Proprietà ha voluto realizzare la zona più pregiata del centro benessere, nonostante le difficoltà tecniche e costruttive che lo spazio presentava.
L’interrato si contraddistingue infatti per la sua copertura a volta ed è completamente realizzato in pietra.
Esteticamente ricorda un’antica cripta ed è plausibile pensare che in passato abbia ricoperto proprio tale funzione, data la vicinanza della chiesa di St. Pierre.
L’altezza del volume è particolarmente limitata, fino ad arrivare a circa un metro e venti centimetri nel punto più basso. Considerata la mancanza di aperture significative, l’ambiente poneva grandi difficoltà tecniche e richiedeva particolari soluzioni progettuali per l’installazione dei necessari impianti di trattamento dell’aria; il tutto senza rovinare un’estetica così caratteristica.
La Proprietà ha quindi deciso di varcare i confini nazionali e di rivolgersi allo Studio Apostoli, società specializzata nella progettazione di SPA e centri benessere a livello internazionale. L’incontro è avvenuto a Parigi, in occasione di Equip’hotel, dove Apostoli era presente in veste di ambasciatore per l’Italia.

Il Concept
Mettere in risalto l’”esistente” dando forza espressiva al progetto.
L’idea progettuale proposta da Alberto Apostoli ha subito soddisfatto le aspettative della Committenza, riuscendo a combinare esigenze tecniche ed estetiche, grazie all’intuizione di amalgamare elementi impiantistici a elementi scenografici.
Il progetto è infatti caratterizzato da un lungo corridoio curvo che conduce verso la zona umida, da un lato, e verso le cabine trattamenti, dall’altro. Nel corridoio è stata ricavata una struttura che accoglie tutte le canalizzazioni e le nasconde dietro ad un telo-teso retroilluminato e contenente le bocchette di aerazione. Grazie ad un piccolo accorgimento grafico, le bocchette si fondono nel telo stesso fino a scomparire nel decoro che ricorda le vigne tipiche della città di Macon, famosa per il suo Chardonnay.
In tal modo si è evitato l’abituale posizionamento a soffitto delle bocchette che avrebbe ulteriormente ridotto l’altezza disponibile.

Zoning
L’area SPA occupa uno spazio di circa 270 metri quadri. La zona umida comprende una sauna finlandese e un bagno a vapore, quasi interamente vetrati; troviamo poi una zona idromassaggio con doccia emozionale e un’ area relax. Per l’area trattamenti sono state invece ricavate due cabine singole e una di coppia. Completa l’ambiente un piccolo angolo tisaneria il cui mobile sembra fluttuare nell’aria, grazie ad una illuminazione posta nella parte sottostante.

Luce e colori
Grande attenzione è stata data al progetto illuminotecnico, fondamentale per risolvere le difficoltà legate ad un ambiente particolarmente angusto. L’illuminazione è quasi totalmente indiretta, ottenuta tramite strip led RGB, gestite da un sistema DALI e posizionate lungo il profilo della volta al fine di evidenziarne la curvatura.
Per bilanciare il peso della pietra a vista e rendere l’ambiente più raffinato, Alberto Apostoli ha lavorato sui colori bianco, nero e inserendo alcuni dettagli oro.

Materiali e attrezzature
Lo Studio apostoli ha cercato di privilegiare prodotti italiani; ceramiche, mosaici, pitture e anche i lettini trattamenti sono tutti “made in Italy”.
Alcuni oggetti sono stati realizzati su disegno come la grande lampada che riprende il logo del centro benessere, posizionata nella sala relax. Tutti i mobili sono customizzati, come i numerosi specchi e le grandi superfici vetrate, necessari a fare “respirare” l’ambiente.
Ricercato l’uso di un mosaico ellissoidale che accompagna gli ospiti verso la zona umida, fondendosi con alcuni tagli di gres fine porcellanato appositamente disegnati e messo in rilievo da alcuni punti luce a pavimento.

Così Apostoli sintetizza il Progetto: “fin dal primo sopraluogo mi sono reso conto della grande possibilità espressiva e progettuale dello spazio ma, al tempo stesso, delle notevoli complicazioni impiantistiche e costruttive.
Abbiamo cercato di creare emozione attraverso un progetto che vertesse su un layout semplice ma non banale e un impegno considerevole in termini di illuminazione, ricerca di materiali e un’attenzione al dettaglio tecnico/costruttivo tipico del nostro profilo professionale.
Ciò che è risultato particolarmente soddisfacente è il connubio materiali pre-esistenze lapidei e materiali contemporanei anche spinti, gestiti attraverso un percorso creativo molto grafico e di contrasto. La Proprietà si è affidata in toto al nostro pensiero e questo ha determinato un risultato importante dal punto di vista della coerenza stilistica e tecnologica. A riprova che anche nei piccoli progetti si possono raggiungere, con la dovuta dovizia e attenzione, risultati considerevoli in termini di creatività e benessere.”
