[This project intervened in a site resulting from gutting the interior of two historic (listed) buildings. We conceived the new building from the conservation of the historic façades, whose stability was assured by buttressing them with a metallic structure. Taking these façades as our starting point, we worked out a strategy to erect one building where two stood previously. We then set out to consolidate the height of the new slabs. To bridge the gap in preexisting elevations, we placed the open staircase-patio on the front of the building at no. 33, setting back the new volumen. In this way, the slabs would not face old gaps. In the covering volumen, we aligned the cornice that unifies both shapes, envisioning it as a clean crest enhancing the original building. This is a terse, luminous body without edges, where expressiveness is defined by the large-format pieces in Macael marble, trimmed with glass holes and hidden profiles. We also redesigned the display windows on the ground floor, combining new safety needs with our proposed synthesis of materials: marble and mulberry wood. The resulting building seeks to highlight underlying values through a careful reconstruction of original woodwork, floral metalwork and other decorative elements on the façades. Finally, the elegant covering volumen provides a clean finish: high-quality natural materials that compete with the original building while also aspiring to highlight its value.

El presente proyecto actúa sobre un solar obtenido a partir del vaciado interior de dos edificios catalogados. El nuevo edificio se plantea a partir de la conservación de las fachadas protegidas, cuya estabilidad se asegura mediante el apeo previo con estructura metálica. Partiendo pues de la conservación de las fachadas, se establece una única estrategia para construir un edificio donde antes había dos. Así, se plantea la unificación en altura de los nuevos forjados y, para salvar la diferencia de cotas preexistente, se ubica la caja de escalera-patio, abierta, en el frente del edificio nº 33, con que se retranquea el nuevo cuerpo evitando así forjados enfrentados con antiguos huecos. En el volumen de la cubierta se establece la alineación de cornisa que unifica ambas volumetrías y se plantea como una coronación pulcra que complemente el edificio original. Es un cuerpo terso, luminoso y sin aristas, cuya expresividad viene definida por las piezas de mármol Macael, de gran formato, enrasadas con huecos de vidrio con perfilería oculta. En la planta baja se rediseñaron los escaparates combinando las nuevas necesidades de seguridad con la síntesis de materiales propuesta: mármol y madera de morera. El edificio resultante, en fin, pretende realzar los valores originales reconstruyendo con minuciosidad sus carpinterías de madera originales, las cerrajerías florales y el resto de elementos decorativos de las fachadas y proponiendo un remate limpio con el elegante volumen de cubierta: materiales naturales de primera calidad que, no solo no compiten con el edificio original, sino que aspiran a subrayar su valor.
