Porto Côvo House

ENG - In Porto Côvo the building occurs in a beach setting. Its presence evokes beach huts and the fisherman’s houses nearby. A whitewashed wall defines the territory and makes the interior inaccessible. But in the interior everything changes. The
glass walls open to the scenery linking outside and inside. The field of perception expands to the limits of the horizon. The composite marble floor, with a sandy colour and particle density, acts as a paradoxical element: we see shifting sands in
the rigidity of concrete; it also acts as mirror and memory.

The lot, with a prime beachfront location, is part of a development in the town limits, north of Porto Côvo. The challenges of this project are based on two factors - the desire to explore the possibilities in residential urban areas, and in this particular case the fact that it is a single family dwelling, and the need to create a new form of dwelling based on a contemporary structure in harmony with the urban, architectural and environmental surrounding.

The outside form resulted from the intention of creating situations of full/empty, adopting a composition of parallelepiped volumes, which create misalignment through its two courtyards, prolonging the experience of the house to the outside.
The location of the openings in the composition of the elevations, which provides visual crossings and the mismatch of the upper floor in relation to the bottom, resulting in a dynamic composition. The floor to ceiling openings, searching outside framings, plans of light of careful proportions that simultaneously capture and filter the surroundings.

On the ground floor are located the entrance hall, with double height and the vertical access, kitchen, living room, an office, a bedroom with en suite toilet and a social toilet. Also on this floor but with a direct and privileged relationship with the outside are located the two patios, one with access only through the kitchen and dining area in the living room, and the other, contained by the interior space circulation, the vestments of the living room and office and open to the West, on the porch and framing the ocean.
On the upper floor are located 2 bedrooms, with private toilet and a vestibule distribution. Both have outdoor living areas, one facing west, a terrace over the garden and the sea.

The street is mostly tapped as garden, except the resulting walls between the limits east and north and the vestments of the building, a space that has a more stable floor, run-based inert, with a high permeability index. To the Southeast is located the car parking, contained by one of the vestments of the building plan and exterior masonry, which acts to conceal this space. The garden is well defined and regulated by walls in the extreme East and North of the lot and a hedge plant to the West and the South, wich is the division of the addorsed neighboring lot.

PT - O terreno, com localização privilegiada frente ao mar, está integrado num loteamento no limite urbano Norte de Porto Côvo.
Os desafios deste projecto assentam em dois factores – o desejo de explorar as possibilidades residenciais em meios urbanos, e neste caso em particular o facto de se tratar de uma habitação unifamiliar, e a necessidade de se criar uma nova forma de habitar assente numa construção/estrutura contemporânea em harmonia com a envolvente urbanística, arquitectónica e ambiental da área e do conjunto edificado em que se integra.

No exterior o desenho resultou da intenção de se criarem situações de cheios/vazios, adoptando-se uma composição de volumes paralelipipédicos, que através do seu desalinhamento criam dois pátios, prolongando a vivência da casa para o exterior.
A localização dos vãos na composição dos alçados, que propicia os atravessamentos visuais e o desfasamento do piso superior em relação ao inferior, resultam numa composição dinâmica. Os vãos rasgados entre pisos procuram enquadrar perspectivas do exterior, planos de luz de proporções rigorosas que simultaneamente captam a envolvente exterior e a filtram.

No piso inferior, situam-se o vestíbulo de entrada com duplo pé direito, onde está localizado o acesso vertical, a cozinha, a sala, um escritório, um quarto com instalação sanitária privativa e uma instalação sanitária de apoio. Ainda neste piso mas com uma relação directa e privilegiada com o exterior situam-se os dois pátios, um interior com acesso através da cozinha e da zona de refeições na sala, e um outro não totalmente interior, pois é delimitado pelo vão do espaço de circulação, pelos paramentos da sala e escritório e aberto a Poente, sobre o alpendre e enquadrando o oceano.

No piso superior situam-se 2 quartos, com instalação sanitária privativa e um vestíbulo de distribuição. Ambos dispõem de zonas de estar exteriores, sendo a do quarto virado a Poente um terraço sobre o jardim e o mar.

O logradouro é maioritariamente aproveitado como jardim, exceptuando-se o espaço resultante entre os muros nos limites Nascente e Norte e os paramentos da construção, espaço este que tem um pavimento mais estável, executado à base de inertes, com um elevado índice de permeabilidade. A Sudeste situa-se o estacionamento automóvel, contido por um dos paramentos da construção e um plano exterior de alvenaria, que cumpre a função de ocultar visualmente este espaço. O jardim é assim definido e regularizado por muros nas extremas Nascente e Norte do lote e por uma sebe vegetal a Poente e a Sul, adossada à divisão do lote vizinho.
