RMJM’s masterplan and design for the Beijing Olympics complex development of commercial and convention centres will have two ‘lives’ – the first was as a key facility in Beijing’s staging of the 2008 Olympics, and a second as a focus for commercial and leisure activity in a new city quarter following the completion of the games.

Beijing’s Olympic Green masterplan is based around the creation of a natural, park-like environment within which all the facilities will be located. The new Convention Centre is located on a prominent site directly across from the stadium.

Throughout the duration of the Games it took on several functions, the principal of which was accommodating the International Broadcast Centre. From here, journalists reported on events to the rest of the world via a range of media.

An important requirement for this building is that it ‘survives’ the Olympics, becoming a focus for commercial activity. It will therefore revert to a multi-purpose convention and exhibition centre after the Games, incorporating permanent and temporary exhibition space, extensive retail and leisure areas, and offi ce accommodation.
