YAC: Lighthouse Sea Hotel

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
A lighthouse is a timeless architecture representing an eternal limit between the land and the sea. It is a strong sign on a territory and a ‘totem’, not only for seamen. From this perspective, imagining a resort on Murro di Porco coast could be quite a difficult task - excluding the lighthouse ‘icon’. Similarly, conceiving a new, remarkable sign in this area, could be even harder, without concealing the peculiar image of that tower. Hence the choice of a pure geometrical shape as the circle that is full of symbolism and primordial meanings like the lighthouse, but it also represents a link, between the coast and the sea. For this reason, this horizontal element establishes a back-and-forth dialog with the vertical tower, becoming soon a complementary part of the lighthouse, without passing over it in the new hierarchical system. In effect, the lighthouse stretches to the sky by nature and to the sea by its iconic light: having a circular element on its base, it strengthens its belonging to the ground. The tower and the circle represent two radical and powerful signs able to transform themselves in a precious and active hub of the existing cultural and touristic network: the city of Syracuse, from the inner side, and the infinity of the Mediterranean Sea, on the other part.

Il faro è un'architettura antichissima, si potrebbe dire 'senza tempo'. Eterno limite fra terra e mare. Ma un faro e’ anche un segno forte sul territorio, un totem sia per chi naviga in acqua, sia per chi vive sulla terraferma. In quest’ottica, immaginare un complesso turistico/alberghiero nell’area del faro di Murro di Porco che non prescinda dall’icona stessa del faro è un’operazione difficile. Ma concepire, allo stesso tempo, una struttura e un sistema che possano costituire, a loro volta, un segno altrettanto notevole in quest'area, senza tuttavia mascherare o, peggio ancora, annullare l’immagine peculiare del faro, potrebbe rappresentare una sfida altrettanto ardua. Da qui la scelta di utilizzare una figura geometrica pura quale il cerchio, che, carica anch’essa di un forte simbolismo e significato primordiali – come, appunto, il faro, - instaura con quest’ultimo un dialogo serrato, senza compromessi, arrivando a fare da complemento all’elemento verticale grazie alla sua intrinseca orizzontalità, senza per questo scavalcarlo nell’ipotetico gioco di gerarchie che il nuovo sistema andrebbe a creare. Infatti, se il faro tende per sua natura strutturale verso l’infinito del cielo e, attraverso il suo iconico fascio di luce, verso l’infinito del mare, l’unione di esso con un elemento circolare alla base, fortifica la sua appartenenza con la terra da cui prende vita, allargando, di fatto, il suo rapporto con l’uomo che qui vi abita. Due segni radicali e potenti capaci di trasformarsi in un nodo prezioso e vitale di una rete culturale e turistica che vede nello storico nucleo di Siracusa, da un lato, e nello sconfinato mare siciliano che bagna le sue terre, dall’altro, una linfa inesauribile di vita e possibilità inedite.

Un duplice faro, dunque: del mare, della terra.
