Manolo Blahnik Selfridges | Nick Leith-Smith Architecture + Design

Located within London’s most iconic store, The Manolo Blahnik salon occupies an exclusive 70 square metre space within Selfridges’ Shoe Galleries.

Inspiration for the design stems from the work of Robert Adam, an early pioneer in uniting architecture, interiors and fashion characteristic to the era. Most notably it was Adams’ work at Osterley House that influenced the vision for a refined Georgian salon.

The space features a monochromatic palette, with dark wood cabinetry and furniture contrasted with shades of palest honey-toned panelling and table tops, thoughtfully accented with brass detailing and splashes of colour. Shoes are elevated on individual plinths and reverently displayed throughout the cabinets.

Harmony and symmetry prevail with elegant framing of space and layering of detail. The curved decorative motif of the wall panelling, formed by in-laying brass, was inspired by the sinuous cabinetry of Thomas Chippendale. His influence can also be observed in the furniture, tables and chairs, with contrast inlays and abstracted geometric forms. Medallion chairs are hand upholstered with horsehair in accents of exuberant colours, reflecting the shoe designs and Blahnik’s personality.

The close alliance between the designer and architect, allows a shared vision to unfold which captures the refinement of a Georgian salon in a contemporary way that harmonies with the architecture of the store. As always, Blahnik’s style, humour and playful irony subtly resonate to create a space to reflect, shop and appreciate the artistry of his shoes.
