In the Alte Post in the heart of Vienna’s 1st district, Thonet will celebrate the Vienna coffee house culture in a special way for a period of one year starting on 29 June 2016: the new Thonet Pop-up Café is a contemporary homage to the traditional history of the company. Selected coffee creations from all continents – served by Jonas Reindl Coffee – will be presented along with Thonet furniture classics and new products. In the generous rooms and the atrium, bentwood classics including the famous Vienna Coffee House Chair 214 by Michael Thonet, tubular steel furniture from the Bauhaus era and modern designs invite visitors to relax and stay a while. The adjacent showroom offers a broad overview of the Thonet portfolio, from living and lounge furniture to office furniture. The innovative café and showroom concept with a total floor space of over 250 m² provides a cosy atmosphere and a variety of interior design examples and living inspirations for all.

In the Thonet Pop-up-Café visitors enjoy coffee specialities and snacks at the inviting wooden table 1404 by Stefan Diez and at the bar tables 1123 by James Irvine, surrounded by a comfortable ensemble of bentwood and tubular steel chairs. In nice weather, the cafe extends to the outdoor area in the adjoining atrium, where the tubular steel classics of the new “Thonet All Seasons” outdoor collection demonstrate what style and design look like outdoors.

In the adjoining showroom, the new bentwood table 1060 by designer Jorre van Ast and the sophisticated side table 1025 by James Van Vossel introduced in Milan in April of this year are presented. The new lounge ranges S 830, S 650, 860 and 2000 join the popular wing chair 808, the lounge classic S 35 by Marcel Breuer from the Bauhaus era and the iconic tubular steel rocking chair S 826. The Thonet lamps LUM and KUULA guarantee cosy lighting.

The Thonet Pop-up Café brings new life to the Alte Post – a building complex comprising almost 35,000 m² in the heart of Vienna. The showroom addresses café visitors, architects, Thonet dealers and their end customers. In addition, the spaces are also available for various theme-specific exhibitions, lectures and festivals until summer 2017. After the summer of next year, the former centre of the Austrial postal service will be converted into a special real estate project with high-end flats, a hotel, green atriums, galleries and businesses.

The café and showroom project was conceived and realised in cooperation with Jonas Reindl Coffee and Standart Mag, the quarterly magazine for beauty and the specialty of coffee. In addition, Gestalten Verlag provides suitable reading material that can be read on site or purchased. Thonet is supported with the furnishings by the following partners: USM, Porzellanmanufaktur Augarten, Vorwerk Flooring, Carpet Sign and Cooper Colours.
