A complete refurbishment to refresh a dated 90s interior for a more contemporary owner. Relocating the front door and staircase enabled increased usable space and introduced daylight into the middle of a deep plan.

 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A mews house acquired in 2012 had character but needed an update to maximize space and light. The house, with two bedrooms and two bathrooms needed to work for a young professional.

Originally, the entrance to the property opened directly onto the street from the living room with a staircase at the rear of the property creating an unnecessary corridor upstairs. The project sought to release floor space and allow light into main areas. The number of rooms in the property were reduced but increased the size of those remaining.

A garage to the left side of the property offered a solution to front door issue by creating a hallway where the garage used to be and moving the door to much it less intrusive into the living space. A laundry was also created in the new extension freeing up space in the main house.

A glass screen was created between the living and dining area, allowing light from the back of house to filter to the front of the house. It also offered definition to the kitchen and dining areas.

A new staircase created the biggest change, providing an almost sculptural aesthetic. A new skylight above the staircase allowed light to fill the centre of the house.

The staircase was constructed using folded metal sheets, adding to the industrial feel of the house and uses the same white oiled oak as flooring as the living room.  Glass balustrades around the double height areas encourage light to flow through the house.
