"The Under of the Top"

Autor: Arch. Sebastiano Lo Giudice

Supervisors: Prof. Arch. M. Oddo; Ing. A. Barracco

From more than ten years, many urban spaces are abandoned and degraded: factories of the twentieth century, quarries and whole big areas located on the outskirts of Melilli.
These forgotten areas could be re-used to propose a new way to live the space, regenerated, revalued and respondent to the request of an healthy society.
Melilli today is an industrialized town, rich of refineries and production factories and it seems to ignore the naturalistic and environmental potential who characterize it. The industrialization, in fact, has upset Melilli from the habits of a bucolic society, bringing it to an immediate economic growth, implying an indifference from the City Administrations to the real land resources.

The project wants to rediscover these resources to promote and to enhance them, trying to establish a dialogue between the new and those spaces in which is ingrained the memory. Considering the urban voids and the areas of historical-cultural and natural interest, the target is to set up an indivisible system from the city, allowing a right connection between the population and his context in which it lives.

The project is to achieve a Park under the city by the target to rediscover the lost identity of Melilli, making a system composed of archaeological and naturalistic interest areas.
