Ex Alumix-Ex Magnesio | monovolume architecture + design

In the heart of the industrial zone of Bolzano South are the former industrial areas of Alumix and Magnesio. The disused areas once housed some of the largest industrial companies in the region. The aim of an international design competition was to upgrade the area and transform it into a technology and business centre for research institutions, industrial companies and start-ups.

The competition proposal creates a place of community and exchange. The theme of connectedness is a central aspect of the two new buildings. With their folded architecture, the two structures integrate into their surroundings like origami. The perforated facade lends the designs dynamism and turns them into a holistic work of art through the constantly changing natural light. At the same time, the circular openings provide a source of light while at the same time offering privacy from outside gazes.

On the former Alumix site, the new building fits in between the listed factory buildings from the 1930s. The rationalist architecture of the existing buildings is contrasted by the modern design of the extension. This creates a connection between the past and the future, between tradition and progress – an optimal environment for research, innovation and entrepreneurship. Towards the new building, the site descends slightly, creating a central meeting point from which the surrounding buildings are centrally accessed.

The former Magnesio site is divided by a road into two plots of equal size. The design bridges this division and takes the theme of connection to a new level. The building flows from one side of the street to the other, culminating in a monumental tower that functions as a landmark visible from afar.

Verbindungen durch Architektur
Im Herzen der Industriezone von Bozen Süd befinden sich die ehemaligen Industriegebiete Alumix und Magnesio. Die stillgelegten Areale beherbergten einst mitunter die größten Industriebetriebe des Landes. Ziel eines internationalen Ideenwettbewerbs war die Aufwertung des Gebiets und die Umwandlung in ein Technologie- und Wirtschaftszentrum mit Forschungseinrichtungen, Industriebetrieben und Start-Ups.

Der Wettbewerbsentwurf schafft einen Ort der Vernetzung und Begegnung. Das Thema der Verbindung ist ein zentraler Aspekt der beiden Neubauten. Mit ihrer gefalteten Architektur integrieren sich die beiden Gebäude wie Origami in ihre Umgebung. Die perforierte Fassadengestaltung verleiht den Entwürfen Dynamik und macht sie durch sich ständig ändernde Lichtverhältnisse zum gesamtheitlichen Kunstwerk. Dabei sorgen die kreisrunden Öffnungen für Lichtzufuhr und bieten gleichzeitig Privatsphäre vor Blicken von außen.

Auf dem ehemaligen Alumix-Gelände fügt sich das neue Gebäude zwischen den denkmalgeschützten Fabriksgebäuden aus den 1930er Jahren ein. Die rationalistische Architektur der Bestandsbauten wird durch das moderne Design des Zubaus kontrastiert. Es entsteht eine Verbindung zwischen Vergangenheit und Zukunft, zwischen Tradition und Fortschritt – eine optimale Umgebung für Forschung, Innovation und Unternehmertum. Zum neuen Gebäude hin senkt sich das Gelände leicht ab wodurch ein zentraler Treffpunkt entsteht, von welchem die umliegenden Gebäude zentral erschlossen werden.

Das ehemalige Magnesio-Gelände wird von einer Straße in zwei gleich große Parzellen geteilt. Diese Trennung überbrückt der Entwurf und hebt das Thema der Verbindung auf eine neue Ebene. Das Gebäude fließt von einer Seite der Straße auf die andere und mündet in einem monumentalen Turm, der als weithin sichtbares Landmark fungiert.

Connessioni attraverso l’architettura
Nel cuore della zona industriale, a Bolzano Sud si trovano le ex aree industriali Alumix e Magnesio. Oggi queste sono aree dismesse, un tempo ospitavano alcune delle più grandi aziende industriali dell’Alto Adige. L'obiettivo del concorso internazionale richiesto era la riqualificazione dell'area e la trasformazione del lotto in un centro tecnologico e commerciale con strutture di ricerca, aziende e spazi per nuove start-up.

Il desidero era creare un luogo adatto per nuovi incontri e che stimolasse lo scambio di idee ed opinioni. Nella nostra proposta, il tema delle connessioni è il vero cuore in entrambi gli edifici. La struttura architettonica si piega ed entrambe le due strutture si integrano nell'ambiente circostante come fossero origami. La facciata perforata, permette il continuo scambio di luce naturale e dona carattere ai due progetti, trasformandoli in opere scenografiche. In facciata, le aperture circolari sono varchi per la luce naturale e mantengono, al tempo stesso, la privacy dagli sguardi esterni.

Sull'ex sito Alumix, il nuovo edificio si inserisce tra gli edifici industriali elencati come edificio storico degli anni '30. L'architettura razionalista degli edifici esistenti è in contrasto con il design moderno della nuova proposta. Questo crea una connessione tra il passato e il futuro, tra tradizione e progresso - un ambiente stimolante per la ricerca, l'innovazione e la nuova imprenditoria. Nel nuovo complesso, il terreno scende leggermente, creando un punto d'incontro centrale da cui si accede centralmente verso gli altri edifici circostanti.

Il sito ex Magnesio è diviso da una strada in due lotti di dimensioni uguali. Il progetto supera questa divisione, introducendo il tema delle connessioni a un nuovo livello. L'edificio collega un lato della strada all’altro, terminando in una torre monumentale che funziona come un punto di riferimento visibile da lontano.
