Atelier Portzamparc - Sintesi progetto
In order to explore the vertigo of the metropolitan question, the crisis it represents, we needed to analyze its system – that living whole – its dynamisms and immobilities. This system is no longer confined to the city. New notions are emerging; new conceptual tools are needed to understand it and to act. Beginning with the recognition that the metropolis is a point and interface in a network with other of the world’s major cities, an immense phenomenon that has only been able to grow beyond the capacity of its physical transport networks because of the recently acquired power of virtual links, we observed the system of hubs and links that crisscross and form synergies between centre and periphery. We identified the possibility of a form of rhizomatous growth, through the divisions and generalized enclosedness of places between rapid transportation “tubes”.
For many people, the metropolis is a chance to experience the modernity of the changing world. But it also represents the waste of environmental and economic resources, the extremely high risk of entrenching social andcultural differences in geometrical space. Averting this process, reventing the suffocation of this universe, this fragile technical artifact, experiencing it differently and better, requires us to act. To act on the system as a whole but starting with the crisis points, the nodal points of economic dynamism and the fluidity of the links. To act step-by-step to reconcile metropolitan-scale functional spaces and local physical spaces, to act to fulfill the demands of sustainable resource management.
