Xenomorph (phase one): Desert Spoon
Japan / 2015
Purpose: The desert spoon is a lighting art installation designed out of wood and paired with spot lighting to emphasize the shape of the plant, and the intense contrast of light and shadow casting on the ground. The visual effect of the design is fully maximized when placed in a dark room at a corner, or better yet, at the center.
Background: The Desert Spoon (Dasylirion wheeleri), also known to the native people of Chihuahua and Sonora as (Common Sotol or Spoon Flower,) is a wild plant native to northern Mexico and to southwestern region of the United States. Aside from its symbolic beauty, the Desert Spoon has many uses at the creative hands of the natives.
Materials: To execute the design, Strips of Bamboo are interwoven together starting from the base upwards—fanning out in a 360-degree-desert-spoon shape. A spot lighting is installed directly above the design casting a worm light and contrasting shadow.
