Material characteristics are used in this terrace cafe to heighten the viewer's experience of the natural environment.
The colorful canopy, made of 1000 pounds of thread hanging from a steel structure, has tactile qualities of softness, and is visually vibrant blending and enhancing the surrounding vegetation. Ultimately this seemingly decorative element is highly pragmatic; acting as both a solar shade and sound absorbing surface which makes the space cool and intimate.
When sitting underneath, there is a palpable feeling of being in nature. “Bringing the Outside In” is something architects usually try to accomplish with glass and transparency, but we find that using a variety of colors, textures, and patterns also achieves this result and even heightens ones sensations.
