Alterations and Additions at our Canada Bay residence called for opening and enlarging the rear of the house to transform it into a modern home for living and entertaining. The long entrance hallway opens up to one large space which incorporates the living, kitchen and dining areas, customised to the needs of the young family. The kitchen features an open galley-style kitchen with generous bench widths and a casual seating space, while the living space features two oversized sliding doors which create a variety of different outdoor living spaces. The combination of frosted and transparent louvres on the sliding door control the amount of heat and light entering the house while providing privacy and ventilation. A productive garden covers the wall of the external court yard and provides a direct visual link to the kitchen that enriches the experience of food preparation. Horizontal timber battens lining the boundary minimise overlooking into the courtyard and outdoor living areas. The motif of recycled brick running through the new addition resonates with the existing conditions of the house and provides a visual link between old and new.
